Season StatsHAMDEN, Conn. – First baseman
Cam Hanley broke up a shutout with a two-out home run in the top of the ninth inning, but the damage had already been done as the Northeastern baseball team suffered a 5-1 setback at Quinnipiac on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Hanley notched two of the Huskies' three hits during the game, finishing two-for-four at the plate while picking up his 10th RBI of the season. First-year infielder
Maxwell Burt doubled during the seventh inning, raising his extra-base hit count to six on the year (five doubles, one home run). Burt also reached base in the ninth inning on a hit-by-pitch.
Â
Center fielder
Michael Foster walked twice but was hitless during his two credited at-bats, while
Rob Fonseca and
Mason Koppens each watched ball four float by them during the day.
Â
Northeastern catcher
Josh Treff caught multiple runners stealing (two), for the third time this season. Treff eyed the Bobcats' Mike Palladino with too large of a lead following a first-inning pitch and proceeded to send a laser of a throw to Koppens at second who skipped the ball over to Piscopo at third for the 2-4-5 caught stealing play. He also sent a bullet of a throw down to second base to catch Iannotti stealing in the eighth.
Â
Quinnipiac's pitchers combined to strikeout eight NU batters while allowing just one runner to reach third base during the afternoon. Charlie Murray earned the victory after 5.1 scoreless innings on the mound for the Bobcats, striking out four and walking three.
Â
Brian Christian faced the minimum of nine Quinnipiac batters during the first three innings of the game for Northeastern (14-21, 7-5 CAA), but struggled in the top of the fourth when the Bobcats' offense found its form. Sophomore
Nate Borges allowed one earned run during 2.2 innings of relief before Wallingford, Connecticut, native
John Amendola shutout Quinnipiac (15-17, 8-4 MAAC) in the seventh and eighth.
Â
Louis Iannotti led the Bobcats with a two-for-three outing at the dish on top of scoring twice, walking once, and collecting one RBI. Both Iannotti and first baseman Vincent Guglietti homered for Quinnipiac, helping the home team tally three of its five runs on balls that landed over the outfield fence.
Â
Both Murray and Christian pitched well during the first three innings of the game as neither team was able squeak out a hit until the bottom of the fourth. Murray retired each of the first 11 NU batters he faced, striking out
Gabe Levanti,
Mike Piscopo, and
Mason Koppens in order during the top of the third. Christian enjoyed similar success, retiring eight Quinnipiac hitters in a row after surrendering a lead-off walk in the first.
Â
After Palladino doubled to begin the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats center fielder made his way to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Scott Donaghue and scored during the next at-bat on an RBI single hit by Matthew Batten. Guglietti continued to cast a shadow over Christian's day by hammering a two-run home run to right center, putting Quinnipiac in front, 3-0.
Â
Nate Borges replaced Chrisitan after the first-year hurler had faced 14 batters in 3.1 innings, but the sophomore surrendered an RBI single to John Bodenhamer that bumped the Bobcats' lead to 4-0.
Â
Hanley recorded the Huskies' first hit of the game in the top of the fifth inning, but Burt's ground ball to second base led to the Bobcats executing a 4-6-3 double play, replacing the NU base runner with two outs on the scoreboard.
Â
Borges retired four straight batters before conceding a solo home run to Iannotti in the sixth that gave Quinnipiac a 5-0 advantage. Although a fielding error by Levanti in left field allowed the inning to continue, Borges recovered nicely to strike out Ben Gibson for the final out of the frame.
Â
Burt made up for his double-play ball in the fifth with a two-bag knock in the top of the seventh, but Hand struck out, swinging, leaving the NU shortstop stranded at second. Amendola retired each of the first five batters he faced upon entering the game in the bottom of the seventh, keeping the Bobcats at five total runs during the final two half-innings.
Â
With two outs in the ninth, Hanley blasted his second career home run over the right-field wall, rounding the bases to assure that the Huskies would not be shutout.
Â
Northeastern will return to Friedman Diamond on Friday, April 17, for a 3 p.m. non-conference game against NYIT. The Huskies and Bears will meet for a three-game series as NU takes its bye week from CAA play.
