InfographicBROOKLINE, Mass. – Center fielder
Michael Foster and first baseman
Cam Hanley combined for six of the Northeastern baseball team's 10 hits on Saturday afternoon as the Huskies clinched their second straight weekend series with an 8-4 win against NYIT.
Â
With the victory, NU improved its home winning streak to five consecutive games and has now won eight of its last nine games at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Foster went three-for-five from the plate on Saturday, powering a three-run home run over the left-center wall that gave Northeastern (16-21, 7-5 CAA) an 8-3 lead. He finished the game with four RBIs and also scored two runs.
Â
Hanley belted three singles during four at-bats, collecting two RBIs and reaching base safely on a walk. During his last three games, Hanley is hitting .538 (seven-for-13) and has recorded five RBIs, two runs, a triple, and a home run. The NU corner infielder's season batting average of .266 ranks fourth best on the squad.
Â
Freshman
Maxwell Burt went two-for-three with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, blasting his first career triple off the left-field wall in the fifth inning that led to him scoring on Foster's home run. Northeastern catcher
Josh Treff stole a base on top of scoring a run and going one-for-five in the batter's box.
Â
Sophomore ace
Dustin Hunt allowed just four hits during 5.0 innings, striking out eight Bears hitters while walking three.
Isaac Lippert relieved Hunt at the start of the sixth and picked up his second save of the year after tossing 4.0 innings, surrendering just one run on two hits while striking out four.
Â
Joe Daru led NYIT (8-17) with two hits, including a triple, scoring on a sacrifice fly hit by Josh Canabal during the seventh inning. Second baseman Matt DiBiase hit a three-run home run, while pitcher Elias Martinez conceded seven runs on seven hits during 4.2 innings on the mound for the Bears.
Â
After flying through the top of the first inning on just eight pitches, Hunt came up on the short end of two long at-bats in the second by allowing Nick Sebastian and Anthony Martelli to reach on a single and a walk, respectively. With the help of two pop-ups, including an infield fly, Hunt recovered well, striking out Thomas Joannou to end the frame.
Â
Much like NYIT in the top of the inning, Northeastern answered the Bears in the bottom of the frame with two base runners of its own as Hanley walked and advanced to second on Treff's single. The two NU runners both moved up a base on a 4-3 ground out by
Jimmy Hand, and Hanley would score as Martinez's ball four to
Mike Piscopo went wide and rolled to the backstop. With runners on the corners, Piscopo took off for second allowing Treff to steal home, putting the Huskies in front, 2-0, on the successful double steal.
Â
Kelly walked to continue the two-out rally, while Foster connected on a pitch and took it to right field for an RBI base-hit that bumped up Northeastern's lead to 3-0.
Â
Hunt pitched well coming out of the NU rally and struck out the side in the top of the third. The Huskies would put two runners in scoring position again during the bottom of the third, but Hand struck out swinging, ending the inning.
Â
NYIT broke through for its first runs of the series in the top of the fourth as DiBiase hit a three-run home run to left field, tying the game at 3-3. Northeastern would answer back and load the bases in the bottom of the frame before Hanley hit a two-RBI single to left field, scoring Foster and Piscopo to give NU a 5-3 advantage.
Â
Back-to-back strikeouts issued to Hand and Piscopo put two outs on the scoreboard after Burt led off the fifth inning with a triple, but the freshman came into score later that frame as Foster notched his third home run of the season, giving NU an 8-3 edge.
Â
Daru would hit a one-out triple for NYIT in the top of the seventh, and scored during the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly by Canabal hit to deep center field. Lippert tossed three strikeouts during the eighth and ninth innings, solidifying the 8-4 victory for the Huskies.
Â
Northeastern will look to sweep its opponent for the second straight weekend on Sunday, April 19, at 12 p.m.
James Mulry (1-5, 6.42 ERA) will make his 11th start of the season for the Huskies.
