Season StatsBOSTON – Third place in the 2015 Beanpot was well earned on Wednesday afternoon at Fenway Park as the Northeastern baseball team scored two runs during the final two innings to come from behind and defeat Harvard, 7-6, in the tournament's consolation game.
Â
With the victory, NU extended its winning streak against Harvard in the Beanpot to four consecutive games, dating back to 2008. The Huskies also matched their 2014 Beanpot result, finishing as the third-place team for the ninth time in program history.
Â
First baseman
Cam Hanley continued his hot hitting stretch by tallying another three hits on Wednesday, including a single in the ninth inning that allowed
Maxwell Burt to score the go-ahead and eventual winning run. Hanley also doubled down the left-field line in the first inning, picking up his eighth two-bagger of the season.
Â
Burt went two-for-three from the plate with two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base. Right fielder
Joey Scambia notched two hits during four at-bats, netting his 20th RBI of the year in the process.
Â
Seven different players ended the day with at least one hit for Northeastern (17-22, 7-5 CAA).
Rob Fonseca and
Josh Treff both doubled off the Green Monster in left field, helping the Huskies pound out three extra-base hits.
Â
Freshman
Brian Christian and sophomore
Nate Borges each allowed three runs on six hits, while
John Amendola tossed four scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits and striking out two.
Aaron Civale closed the game out for the Huskies in the bottom of the ninth, stifling a two-out rally by forcing Matt Hink to ground out with the winning run on first base.
Â
Harvard (18-20, 7-9 Ivy League) threw seven different pitchers at NU during the game, none of whom lasted longer than 2.0 innings. Mitch Klug went three-for-five for the Crimson while Jake McGuiggan and Conor Quinn each blasted two-run home runs that kept Harvard within striking distance.
Â
Three wild pitches by Crimson starter Shaun Rubin in the first inning allowed Foster to make his way around the diamond one base at a time, scoring easily to put Northeastern ahead, 1-0. Harvard would take back the lead during the bottom of the frame as McGuiggan hammered a home-run ball over the Green Monster in left field, putting the Crimson back in front, 2-1.
Â
Treff led off the top of the second with a double that ricocheted halfway up the Monster in left field, and eventually came into score on a sacrifice fly by Burt that tied the game at 2-2.
Â
Harvard would continue to move its bats well during the bottom of the second, and retook the lead after Colton singled to left with two runners in scoring position, driving in one. With Matt Rothenberg stuck at second on the previous play, the Crimson loaded the bases with a single by Martin, but the NU defense helped Christian out of a jam as Burt initiated a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Â
Northeastern rallied in the top of the third and came back to tie the game at 3-3 after Scambia ripped an RBI single to right field that scored Madigan from second. The Huskies would do the Crimson in for two more runs in the fourth as back-to-back singles by Burt and
Nolan Lang put two runners in scoring position. Foster proceeded to drive in Lang on a sacrifice fly before Kelly hit a slow grounder to second that left Harvard with no play to stop Burt from scoring.
Â
The Crimson erased a 5-3 deficit to Northeastern after Quinn tied the game with a two-run homer down the left-field line. Although the Huskies would turn another 6-4-3 double play in the fifth with runners on first and second, Harvard went in front, 6-5, on an RBI single by John Fallon.
Â
While solid relief innings by Amendola kept the Crimson's lead at just one run, NU would catch a break in the eighth after a relay throw from right field bounced away from the catcher, allowing Fonseca to advance an extra base and ultimately tying the game at 6-6.
Â
Burt opened the top of the ninth with a single and later stole second base with two outs in the inning. During the next at-bat, Madigan was hit by a pitch, putting Hanley in position to hit the eventual game-winning single to center field that scored Burt from second.
Â
With the conclusion of the 2015 Beanpot, Northeastern will resume its CAA schedule on Friday, April 24, when the Huskies host Hofstra for the first game of a three-game set. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
