Cam Hanley drove in all of the Northeastern baseball team's three runs on Saturday courtesy of a third-inning triple and a fifth-inning double as the Huskies held off Hofstra, 3-2, to claim their ninth CAA victory of the season.
Â
Seven different NU batters churned out nine hits during the afternoon while
Dustin Hunt and
Aaron Civale limited the Pride to just two runs on five hits.
Â
Hanley reached base during all four of his plate appearances, going two-for-two with a double, a triple, two walks, and three RBIs. Freshman
Mason Koppens recorded his third multi-hit game of the season, finishing the game two-for-four with a stolen base.
Â
With Saturday's win against Hofstra (15-24, 3-14 CAA), NU clinched its third consecutive weekend series and improved its record in home CAA games to an impressive 8-0. Northeastern (19-22, 9-5 CAA) is one of only two teams in the league, along with UNCW (6-0), yet to lose a conference game on its home field this season.
Â
Keith Kelly went one-for-four out of the lead-off spot for the Huskies, scoring once and also reaching base on a walk. First baseman
Rob Fonseca scored twice and picked up his 28th base-hit of the year, while
Maxwell Burt,
Joey Scambia, and
Nolan Lang each belted a single out of the sixth, seventh, and eighth spots in the NU batting order, respectively.
Â
Hunt retired 10 straight batters after surrendering a run to the Pride during the top half of the first and had allowed just three hits before Hofstra's Brett Johnson homered in the seventh inning. Civale relieved Hunt after 6.2 innings of work, striking out two en route to securing his sixth save of the year.
Â
Hofstra's Alec Eisenberg struck out seven Northeastern batters but was charged with only two earned runs despite being on the mound for both of Hanley's extra-base knocks. Johnson led the Pride with two hits while Annunziata registered a double and a run scored.
Â
Back-to-back hits by Annunziata and Steven Foster put runners on the corners for Hofstra before the Huskies were able to collect their first defensive out of the game in the top of the first. Brad Witkowski would hit a fly ball to center field that traveled deep enough for Annunziata to score from third, giving the Pride an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Hunt fell into a groove during the next few innings, retiring Hofstra in order in both the second and third innings. Kelly and Fonseca opened the bottom of the third with two consecutive singles that put runners on first and second base for Hanley, who delivered a two-RBI triple through the gap in right center that put the Huskies back in front, 2-1. Hanley headed home after Eisenberg's pitch rolled to the backstop on a passed ball, but the Hofstra catcher threw the NU designated hitter out at the plate.
Â
David Leiderman snapped Hunt's streak of 10 consecutive batters retired in the top half of the fourth and stole second before Brian MacDonald walked on four pitches. With the potential tying run at second base, Lang scooped up a ground ball off Johnson's bat and flipped it over to Fonseca at first, ending the inning.
Â
Northeastern would keep hammering away at Eisenberg in the bottom of the fifth as Fonseca's grounder went through the third baseman's legs, allowing the NU power hitter to reach base on the error. During the next at-bat, Hanley took a 2-2 pitch to center field and turned it into a double, scoring Fonseca from second.
Â
With a 3-1 lead to work with, Hunt steamrolled through the sixth but ran into trouble in the seventh when Johnson hit a solo shot to right field that cut the Huskies' lead to 3-2. Civale replaced Hunt with two outs in the inning and the tying run on second, but the sophomore reliever struck out Annunziata, swinging.
Â
Hanley would walk to start the bottom of the seventh and later advance to third on two separate wild pitches, but NU was unable to bring him home to add to its one-run lead. Johnson would prolong the game in the ninth with a two-out single but Civale forced Eric Ferguson to ground out, sealing the 3-2 victory for the Huskies.
Â
Northeastern looks to complete the sweep of Hofstra on Sunday, April 26, at 12 p.m., when the two programs face off for the series finale at Friedman Diamond. The first 50 students in attendance Sunday will receive a Paws bobble-head.
