BOSTON – Massachusetts baseball glory is on the line Wednesday afternoon as the Northeastern baseball team begins its quest to claim the 2015 Beanpot trophy with a 3 p.m. semifinal game on the road against Boston College. The Huskies and Eagles will meet for a rematch of last year's consolation game, with the winner advancing to play either Harvard or Massachusetts in the championship game scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, at Fenway Park.
Â
All-time against Boston CollegeÂ
Northeastern will meet Boston College for the 158th time in program history on Tuesday as the two teams renew their annual local rivalry. The Huskies have squared off against the Eagles at least once during each season dating back to 1946, 24 years after NU and BC had faced each other for the first time in 1922. Although Boston College leads the all-time series, 92-64-2, Northeastern has won five out of its last seven matchups opposite BC.
Â
Scouting the EaglesÂ
Wednesday's game will be Boston College's first home game of the 2015 season after record snowfall this winter in Boston has already forced the Eagles to move seven games away from its home facility. Although BC (14-16, 5-9 ACC) has been swept in three three-game series by No. 4 LSU, No. 22 Florida State, and No. 18 Louisville, the Eagles did win three out of four games at the 2015 Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. Against common opponents, Boston College has defeated Kansas (W, 6-4) and lost to Connecticut (L, 7-8), while Northeastern has lost to both the Jayhawks (L, 4-6) and the Huskies (L, 1-9). BC also topped the Huskies, 22-1, when the two teams met earlier this season on March 24.
Â
Chris Shaw leads the Eagles with a .333 batting average and is seventh in the nation with 41 RBIs, while teammate Michael Strem is hitting .322 with a team-best 13 doubles. Senior right-hander Eric Stone boasts an ERA of 2.53 and has struck out 10 batters in 10.2 innings this year.
Huskies in the BeanpotÂ
Northeastern owns a 24-24 all-time record in the Beanpot and has won six championships (1994, 1995, 2002, 2007, 2009, 2013), second among participating teams behind Boston College (10). Although the Huskies are 6-12 in 18 tournament meetings against BC, NU did come away victorious, 4-3, during its most recent Beanpot matchup against the Eagles in the 2014 consolation game. Northeastern last won the Beanpot in 2013 when the Huskies defeated Harvard (10-1) and Massachusetts (6-3) en route to bringing the championship back to Huntington Avenue. NU is also 12-13 during the semifinal round.
