BOSTON – For the third straight year and fifth time since joining the CAA in 2006, the Northeastern baseball team heads into championship week as the Huskies look to capture their first ever league title. NU enters the double-elimination tournament as the No. 3 seed by virtue of finishing the regular season with the program's best conference mark (14-10) since its inaugural CAA campaign. The Huskies will begin the tournament, held in Charleston, South Carolina, at the Ballpark at Patriots Point, on Wednesday, May 20, at 3:30 p.m. against No. 6 William & Mary.

All-time in the CAA tournament

Northeastern is 4-8 all-time in the CAA tournament and has advanced as far as the ninth game of championship week (2013). After dropping each of their first five tournament games in 2006, 2009, and 2013, the Huskies won three straight games en route to becoming one of the final three teams remaining in the 2013 field, but were kept out of the championship game with a 12-4 loss to No. 2 William & Mary. With a victory against No. 6 James Madison in last year's tournament, NU has won at least one CAA postseason game during each of the past two seasons.

SCOUTING THE FIELD

Against No. 1 College of Charleston in 2015
Head-to-head record in 2015: 1-2 (May 14-16)
Record in CAA tournament: 0-0
All-time series: 3-3

In dramatic fashion, Rob Fonseca's three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning against No. 15 College of Charleston on May 14 propelled Northeastern to its first victory against a team ranked in the NCBWA poll since April 5, 2008 (No. 30 UNCW, 6-4). Nick Berger tossed 6.0 scoreless innings in that game, leaving in the seventh with NU leading, 1-0. The Huskies' four extra-base hits against the Cougars' Taylor Clarke (12-1, 1.46 ERA) were the most any team has registered against the Charleston ace this season. Northeastern is also responsible for three of the Cougars' nine CAA losses (39-9), including the postseason, during the past two years.

Against No. 2 UNCW in 2015
Head-to-head record in 2015: 0-3 (March 20-22)
Record in CAA tournament: 1-0
All-time series: 9-19-1

Although the Huskies held leads during each of its three regular-season games against the Seahawks, UNCW stayed the course and used a couple of late-game rallies to push past NU. Catcher Josh Treff finished a triple short of hitting for the cycle on March 20 as Northeastern's 5-4 lead slipped away as a result of a six-run rally by the Seahawks in the seventh (L, 10-5). NU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings on May 21 with the help of a two-run homer by Jimmy Hand, but UNCW scored two in the eighth to win a one-run affair, 4-3. The Seahawks completed the sweep by hitting four home runs on May 22 en route to a 15-1 victory.

Against No. 4 Elon in 2015
Head-to-head record in 2015: 1-2 (April 3-5)
Record in CAA tournament: 0-0
All-time series: 1-2

A two-run double by Cam Hanley in the first inning helped NU take an early 2-0 lead against Elon on April 3, but an eighth-inning grand slam by Chris King lifted the Phoenix to a 6-2 win. Pat Madigan, Rob Fonseca, and Maxwell Burt each blasted home runs against Elon on April 4 as the Huskies broke a 5-5 tie in the eighth with an RBI single by Cam Hanley. The Phoenix would score six runs in the bottom of the first to take a commanding 6-0 lead during the series finale on April 5, but Isaac Lippert and Mike Fitzgerald combined to throw eight strikeouts during seven scoreless innings despite the Huskies' comeback falling short, 6-3.

Against No. 5 Delaware in 2015
Head-to-head record in 2015: 3-0 (March 27-29)
Record in CAA tournament: 1-3
All-time series: 28-44

Late-game heroics by Maxwell Burt and Cam Hanley allowed Northeastern to walk-off twice against Delaware as NU celebrated its first regular-season sweep of the Blue Hens since 2009. In the bottom of the 13th inning on March 27, Burt singled down the left-field line, bringing Hanley in to score from third as the Huskies defeated Delaware, 3-2. Dustin Hunt threw five strikeouts on March 29 as Northeastern completed a wire-to-wire win, 5-3, during a doubleheader-shortened, seven-inning game. Trailing the Blue Hens, 4-0, during the second game, Joey Scambia hit an inside-the-park home run and Hanley singled with the bases loaded in the ninth as the Huskies walked-off again in 5-4 fashion.

Against No. 6 William & Mary in 2015
Head-to-head record in 2015: 2-1 (May 8-10)
Record in CAA tournament: 0-1
All-time series: 13-18

NU limited defending CAA regular-season champion William & Mary to six total runs during a three-game series between May 8 and May 10, including one 11-inning game. Nick Berger dueled with the Tribe's Jason Inghram during the series opener, allowing just two runs during 7.1 innings and striking out six despite losing a 3-1 contest on the road. For the second straight game, Northeastern and William & Mary were tied, 1-1, heading into the eighth inning, but Dustin Hunt and Aaron Civale combined to throw 10 strikeouts as Nolan Lang's RBI single in the 11th put the Huskies up for good, 2-1. NU finished off the Tribe, 8-2, on May 10 as NU cruised to a 7-0 lead in the third inning before Maxwell Burt hit his second home run of the season in the fifth.
