Season StatsTOWSON, Md. – First baseman
Rob Fonseca hammered two home runs and freshman third baseman
Nolan Lang went four-for-five from the plate on Sunday afternoon as the Northeastern baseball team spoiled Towson's Senior Day with a 16-6 victory against the Tigers.
Â
Seven different NU batters recorded at least two hits during the afternoon as Northeastern (21-24, 11-7 CAA) pounded out a season-high total of 19 hits. The Huskies' 16 runs were also a season best and the most the program has produced in a single game since May 11, 2014, when NU routed James Madison, 17-1.
Â
Fonseca belted his 10th and 11th home runs of the year over the outfield fence and finished the game going three-for-six with three RBIs and three runs scored. Lang began the day with four consecutive singles until he was retired for the first time in the eighth inning, ending the game with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Â
Sophomore
Cam Hanley went three-for-six from the batter's box and drove in four RBIs, while catcher
Josh Treff went two-for-five, scoring twice and collecting two more RBIs. Second baseman
Keith Kelly tallied three hits by game's end and netted two RBIs and two runs scored.
Michael Foster reached base three times, all on walks, and scored three runs as well out of the lead-off spot in the Huskies' batting order.
Â
James Mulry conceded just three runs, two earned, on five hits for Northeastern, but his day was limited to just 4.0 innings due to a high pitch count (82 pitches). Sophomore reliever
Aaron Civale had tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen until Towson's Peter Bowles hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, but the NU closer earned the victory, improving his pitching record to 4-2 overall.
Â
Similar to the Huskies, seven different Tigers batters registered at least one hit as Towson (15-31-2, 8-13 CAA) threw 11 hits up on the scoreboard off NU pitchers. Richie Blosser went three-for-four and scored a run for the Tigers, while teammate Mark Grunberg hit a solo home run and scored twice, ending the afternoon with two hits in five trips to the plate. Starter Lee Lawler surrendered nine runs, six earned, during 4.0 innings of work before Towson reliever Nick Cioffi gave up two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Â
Northeastern saw the ball well off the bat during the top of the first, rallying for six runs on five hits and three errors. After Foster walked and Kelly singled to left, Fonseca reached on a fielding error by Brady Policelli, and Hanley proceeded to give NU a 2-0 lead on a bases-loaded single through the right side. Two batters later, Treff put the Huskies ahead, 4-0, with a two-RBI double down the left-field line.
Â
NU took a commanding 5-0 lead on an RBI single by Lang that scored Treff from second base, and tacked on another run off an RBI single by
Maxwell Burt and another error that drove in Lang from third.
Â
Towson would slowly chip into Northeastern's lead during the next three innings. Grunberg scored in the bottom of the first on a fielder's choice where Burt elected to retire Colin Dyer at second. The Tigers would cut the Huskies' lead to 6-2 on a wild pitch from Mulry that traveled behind Treff, and Grunberg made it 6-3 in the third after hitting a solo homer down the left-field line.
Â
NU would widen its advantage in the top of the fourth as Kelly hit an RBI single that scored Lang and Hanley smoked a two-RBI single to left-center, putting the Huskies ahead, 9-3. In the top of the sixth, Fonseca blasted his first homer of the game to left field to give NU an 11-3 edge, and two innings later, Northeastern had built a 13-3 advantage courtesy of RBI singles by Lang and Kelly.
Â
With the game out of reach, Towson looked for its senior members of its bullpen to throw the final innings for the Tigers. Senior David Sapp came on to pitch in the top of the eighth for Towson, but he issued a walk to
Pat Madigan before conceding back-to-back singles to Treff and
Gabe Levanti. Foster gained another RBI on a fielder's choice that put NU in front, 15-3.
Â
Bowles placed a blemish on Civale's final stat line in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run homer to left center that made the score 15-6, but Fonseca answered back in the ninth with his second home run of the game that sealed up a 16-6 victory for the Huskies.
Â
With the win, Northeastern needs just one more conference victory to clinch a spot in the CAA tournament. The Huskies will travel to Hartford on Tuesday, May 5, for a 12 p.m. showdown before meeting up with William & Mary this weekend for a pivotal conference series in Wiliamsburg, Virginia.
