Hofstra defends home court against Huskies

Box Score | Season Stats | Infographic

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Despite reducing a 13-point, first-quarter deficit down to seven by halftime, the Northeastern women's basketball team struggled to fend off Hofstra during the second half on Friday afternoon as the Huskies dropped a 75-50 road game to the Pride.

Kazzidy Stewart led Northeastern (7-10, 2-4 CAA) with 11 points, coming one point away from equaling her season high of 12. The senior from Lanham, Maryland, finished the game with three made field goals on what was a tough shooting day for the Huskies (29.1 percent).

Gabriella Giacone's basket 21 minutes into the game was the only lead NU saw on Friday as Hofstra (14-3, 5-1 CAA) soon scored 14 unanswered points to take a commanding, 12-point edge. Northeastern faced an uphill battle the rest of the way, reducing the gap to as close as six points, 24-18, with 2:40 to play in the second quarter.

Junior Francesca Sally reached the 10-point hump for the sixth time in nine games, ending the contest with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Freshman Jess Genco's six points, two assists, and three steals, were skewed by five turnovers, while Samantha DeFreese was limited to just two points on two shot attempts. Giacone also garnered six of her 10 points from the free-throw line, finishing a perfect six-of-six from the line.

Zoe Zwerling played a season high, 33 minutes, on Friday, scoring seven points. Zwerling and Sally combined for 17 of the Huskies' 19 bench points, which were six points more than the 13 that the Pride's reserves were able to achieve.

Three double-digit scorers in Kelly Loftus (21 points), Anjie White (16), and Ashunae Durant (14) led Hofstra on Friday. White made eight of her nine field-goal attempts, helping Hofstra shoot a combined 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field.

Northeastern had difficulty establishing a post presence against Hofstra on Friday, losing the points-in-the-paint battle, 32-14, to the Pride. Hofstra's full-court press during the first quarter also forced NU into committing a handful of turnovers in the backcourt, which the Pride utilized to swing an 11-0 advantage in fast-break points.

Due to the winter storm affecting the majority of the Northeast, Sunday's game between Northeastern and Drexel has been postponed to Monday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m.
