BOSTON – Set to play its first road game in more than a month after completing the longest home stand in program history (six games), the Northeastern women's basketball team will travel to the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, on Friday, Jan. 8, for a 7 p.m. conference contest against Drexel. While the Huskies and Dragons will both enter Friday's game with identical overall records of 5-7, NU can pull even with Drexel at 1-1 in the early CAA standings with a victory.
Â
ALL-TIME AGAINST DREXELÂ
Northeastern and Drexel have only played each other as members of the same conference, crossing paths in the America East (and its predecessor, North Atlantic Conference) between 1992 and 2001, as well as annually in the CAA since 2006. NU owned a 16-7 advantage against the Dragons during both programs' stay in the America East, but Drexel has won 16 of the 19 CAA matchups between the two schools. Overall, the Huskies trail the Dragons, 19-23, in the all-time series.
Â
SCOUTING THE DRAGONSÂ
One of the top shooting teams in the CAA, Drexel (5-7, 1-0 CAA) leads the league in team free-throw percentage (76.5 percent) and 3-point field-goal percentage (37.5 percent), and is fourth in overall field-goal percentage (38.6 percent). With 104, 3-point makes this season, a mark that is tied for 40th best in the nation, the Dragons can be lethal from the perimeter if not kept in check. Preseason All-CAA First Team selection Sarah Curran (14.9 points, 5.7 rebounds per game) leads the way for Drexel, with Preseason All-CAA Second Team mention Rachel Pearson (14.8 points, 2.3 rebounds per game) directly behind her.Â
Â
DRAININ' THE MONEY BALLÂ
NU has successfully knocked down ten 3-pointers during two of its last three games. Seven different Northeastern players made 3-pointers against Canisius on Dec. 21 as the Huskies shot 37.0 percent from behind the arc (10-of-27). On Jan. 3, NU made ten 3-pointers again during its CAA-opening game against Towson, shooting a season best, 38.5 percent, from long range.
Claudia Ortiz also drilled a career high, four 3-pointers, that day against the Tigers.
Â
NU IN TRUE ROAD GAMESÂ
The Huskies are undefeated in true road games this season at 3-0. NU opened the 2015-16 season with road wins against Boston University (W, 77-44) and Siena (W, 70-67), and more recently defeated New Hampshire, 66-54, at Lundholm Gymnasium on Dec. 2.
Â
HUSKIES HIT FOUR THREES IN 73 SECONDSÂ
Trailing Towson, 67-57, with 2:49 remaining in regulation on Jan. 3, Northeastern erased the 10-point deficit by hitting four consecutive 3-pointers within a jaw-dropping 73 seconds of game time. Clutch, long-range shooting by
Zoe Zwerling (twice),
Kazzidy Stewart, and
Jess Genco helped NU score 13 unanswered points to take a 70-67 lead with 49 ticks to go. Towson would dash the Huskies' comeback bid, though, as the Tigers' Dominique Johnson hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 7.4 seconds remaining for the 72-71 victory.
Â
FIVE HUSKIES SCORE 10 AGAINST TOWSONNortheastern saw five players score in double figures during the Huskies' CAA-opening game against Towson on Jan. 3.
Francesca Sally led NU with 14 points, while
Jess Genco (12 points), Caludia Ortiz (12),
Gabriella Giacone (11), and
Kazzidy Stewart (10) each posted two-digit scoring totals.
Â
GENCO LEADS NCAA ROOKIES IN MINUTESÂ
Freshman
Jess Genco leads all Division I freshmen in minutes per game with an average court time of 37.9 minutes per game. Genco is also ranked fourth in the nation in the same category among all Division I student-athletes, trailing only Hampton's Malia Tate-DeFreitas (39.4 minutes per game), UNCG's Lucy Mason (38.0), and Wyoming's Marquelle Dent (37.9).
Â
DEFREESE ONE OF NATION'S TOP SHOOTERSÂ
With a 10-game season field-goal percentage of 57.1 (60-of-105),
Samantha DeFreese is ranked in a tie for 24th in the nation with Florida State's Shakayla Thomas. DeFreese is ranked first in the CAA in field-goal percentage and owns fourth place on the conference's scoring list as of Jan. 7.
Â
LENDING A HELPING HANDÂ
Northeastern dished out a season high, 21 team assists, on 26 made field-goals during the Huskies' Jan. 3 game against Towson.
Jess Genco led NU with six assists, while
Kazzidy Stewart set a new season high with five.
NU IMPROVES NON-CON RECORDÂ
After swinging just three non-conference victories during the 2014-15 regular season (3-7), Northeastern increased its out-of-league fortunes by two wins during 2015-16, achieving a record of 5-6.
Â
EYES ON THE PRIZEÂ
Since joining the CAA at the start of the 2005-06 season, the Huskies are 55-124 overall in league play. Northeastern has won six or more conference games six times during its 10 seasons in the league and has reached the 10-win mark once during the 2012-13 campaign.
Â
LONGEST HOME STAND IN NU HISTORYNortheastern picked up only one victory during its six-game home stand, the largest stretch the Huskies have ever experienced in program history. During the six games, NU hosted three teams ranked within the top 125 of the Jan. 7 RPI ratings, including nationally-ranked Michigan State (No. 28) and Boston College (No. 47).
Â
FIVE GAMES, FIVE LEADING SCORERSÂ
During Northeastern's five games between Dec. 4 and Dec. 28, the Huskies observed five different leading scorers:
Â
| Date | Opponent | Result | Leading Scorer |
| Dec. 4 | Maine | W, 56-44 | DeFreese (25) |
| Dec. 9 | Quinnipiac | L, 60-71 | Eason (15) |
| Dec. 18 | No. 24/22 Michigan State | L, 51-77 | Sally (14) |
| Dec. 21 | Canisius | L, 57-68 | Genco (11) |
| Dec. 28 | Boston College | L, 45-71 | Giacone (14) |
Â
ON THE PATH TO 900 CAREER POINTSÂ
Senior forwardÂ
Samantha DeFreese enters Friday's game needing just 12 points to reach the 900-career-point milestone. During her four-year career, DeFreese has amassed 888 career points at an average of 9.5 points per game.
Â
FLIP THAT SCRIPTÂ
Northeastern went 3-1 this season against non-conference opponents it faced during the 2014-15 campaign. Last year, NU went 1-3 against Boston College (L, 56-66), Boston University (W, 75-74), Maine (L, 51-60), and New Hampshire (L, 62-63), but the Huskies have already improved on that mark this year by storming away with two 12-point victories against the Wildcats (W, 66-54), and the Black Bears (W, 56-44).
Â
NEW CAA SCHEDULE FOR WOMEN'S HOOPSÂ
A new feature of the 2015-16 CAA schedule, all conference games will take place this season on either Fridays or Sundays, with the exception of the regular-season finale on Wednesday, March 2. The CAA adopted the change during the offseason in an effort to provide its member teams with more consistent game days and practice days.
Â
COLE ON THE NEW CAA SCHEDULEÂ
"The Friday-Sunday aspect of this year's conference schedule is huge," saidÂ
Kelly Cole. "Having coached in the Ivy League where we would play back-to-backs, this is a great step for the CAA and for our student-athletes. Not only will it positively affect our travel come January and February, but I am confident it will have a positive affect on our student-athletes and their coursework as well."
