BOSTON – On the door of fortifying a berth in the CAA tournament, the red-hot Northeastern men's soccer team will make its final road trip of the 2016 regular season to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on Saturday, Oct. 29, for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Cougars. The Huskies ride a three-match winning streak into the weekend and have won four of their last five outings, posting three clean sheets while sporting a +4 goal differential.

CAA POSTSEASON RACE

With six league matches remaining across the CAA, the Huskies control their own destiny when it comes to clinching a spot in the conference tournament and can successfully do so with a victory Saturday against College of Charleston. Northeastern (3-4-0, nine points) is currently ranked fifth in the league table, but a win against the Cougars will guarantee NU a higher position than James Madison (3-3-2), who is locked into the final standings with 11 points. The Huskies are still in contention for the No. 4 seed and a home match in the league quarterfinals, needing a victory and fewer than six points by UNCW during the Seahawks' final two CAA matches. A loss to College of Charleston on Saturday would not entirely jeopardize the Huskies' chances of making the CAA tournament as NU can watch the league from afar on Tuesday night, requiring help then from UNCW and College of Charleston.

RECAPPING WEEK NINE

Upping its winning streak to three straight matches, Northeastern (6-9-0, 3-4-0 CAA) rolled right along after securing a 3-1, midweek victory against Holy Cross, hailing its seniors with a 1-0 league victory on Oct. 22 against UNCW. The Huskies put on a brilliant display during the first half of both matches, combining to outscore their opponents, 4-0, during the opening 45 minutes each night. Goals from Christian McKenna (ninth minute), Kevin Carvalho (19th), and Brendan Massie (27th) lifted NU to a comfortable, 3-0 advantage against the Crusaders on Oct. 19, three days before the Huskies rallied around Gaku Lange's eighth-minute goal, blanking the Seahawks on 16 shots.

SCOUTING COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON

Since escaping with a 2-1, overtime victory against James Madison on Oct. 1, College of Charleston has gone winless in five straight matches, despite playing to a scoreless draw against No. 3 North Carolina on Oct. 18. Despite entering Saturday night's match with a record of 3-8-3 (1-3-2 CAA), the Cougars are still very much alive in the race for the CAA tournament and can pull to within a point of Northeastern before wrapping up its conference schedule on Nov. 1 against Drexel.

Nico Rittmeyer leads the way for Charleston with seven points (three goals, one assist), having directed 11 of his 21 shots this season on goal. Nicolas Jeausseran ranks second on the squad in points (five) but paces the Cougars with 24 shots. Kevin Shields has been Charleston's main goalkeeper this year having started 13 matches and played 1,191 minutes. All three of Shields' victories in 2016 (3-5-3) have resulted in clean sheets.

LAST MEETING

NU entertained College of Charleston on Senior Night in 2015, prevailing 2-1 against the Cougars courtesy of first-half goals by Christian McKenna and Khesanio Hall. McKenna opened the scoring during the 20th minute, volleying a one-timer from the right side that had been sent in by Hall, who would go on to bury a penalty kick seven minutes later. The Huskies outshot the Cougars, 16-6, and doubled up the visitors in shots on goal, 6-3. Jonathan Thuresson saved two of the three shots he faced, conceding during the 62nd minute to Charleston's Leland Archer.
