STONY BROOK, N.Y. – In yet another game to come down to the wire this week, the Northeastern men's basketball fell to Stony Brook 77-75 Saturday night at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
Â
After
Alex Murphy tied the game up at 75-all via a three-point play for Northeastern (4-4), Stony Brook (2-5) took the lead via a pair of free throws awarded to Lucas Woodhouse in the waning seconds.
Jeremy Miller tried the game-winner on the other end with time winding down, but the shot just missed as the Seawolves escaped with the win.
Â
TJ Williams recorded his sixth 20-point game of the season with a 20 point, seven assist outing, but was just five-of-11 from the free throw line on the night.
Alex Murphy chipped in with 19 points, including a clutch three points down the stretch, and six rebounds.
Â
Devon Begley added 12 points including three clutch 3-pointers while
Anthony Green finished with a season-high nine points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of action.Â
Â
Stony Brook was led by Woodhouse who had 17 points on the night, and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe including the game-winning free throws with just seconds left on the clock. Â
Â
After Stony Brook got out to a 15-point lead midway through the first half, Northeastern began its comeback at the end of the first and continued that stretch into the second half, regaining the lead on the third of Begley's treys.
Â
Shawn Occeus, who drove to the basket and found himself surrounded, saw an open Begley waiting behind the line and kicked it out to his teammates to give the Huskies their first lead since early on in the first.
Â
But Stony Brook countered the Huskies 12-0 run with a 16-2 run of its own to regain an eight-point edge with just over eight minutes remaining in the ballgame.
Â
Northeastern cut the lead down to two via back-to-back treys by Miller, just his second and third baskets of the game, and evened the score on the Murphy three-point play, but Stony Brook hung on for the win.
Â
The Huskies got out to a fast 7-0 lead on the night as Williams capitalized on the opening tip win with a layup to start things off.
Jeremy Miller added a transition three and
Alex Murphy followed up with a lay up during the run.
Â
But Stony Brook countered back with seven points and then some, going on a 15-0 run, and eventually hitting five threes in a row to take a fast 21-10 lead in the first eight minutes of play.
Â
After going without a field goal for seven minutes, Northeastern rallied back in the final eight minutes of the first half cutting the lead down to seven behind a Begley trey. The Seawolves built the lead back to 10 points, but Begley hit from the corner to bring the lead back down to seven, before Williams added a three as time expired in the first half to send the Huskies to the locker room down just four at the half.
Â
The Huskies will continue their road trip with another away game, but more local this time, when Northeastern heads to Harvard for a meeting with their crosstown rival on Tuesday, December 6 at 7 p.m.Â
