InfographicNORMAN, Okla. –
Pat Madigan drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning and the Northeastern baseball team hung on to defeat No. 30 Oklahoma for the Huskies first ever victory over a Big 12 opponent.
Â
The Huskies (1-0) took home the opening day win for the second straight season, the first time they have achieved the feat since 2009-10.
Mike Glavine remained perfect on opening day (2-0), starting each of his seasons on Huntington Ave. in winning fashion. Glavine also picked up his first career win over a power conference in just his second season at the helm of the Husky baseball program.
Â
Madigan was 1-for-4 on the day with his lone up the middle driving in the game-winning run for the Huskies.
Max Burt was 3-for-3 from the plate for Northeastern while rookie
Jake Farrell and redshirt senior
Josh Treff each finished with an RBI on the day.
Â
Aaron Civale got the opening day start for Northeastern, just his second career start after spending the majority of his first two seasons as a Husky in the bullpen. The junior pitched 7.1 strong innings for the Huskies, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high eight batters.
Â
Mike Fitzgerald came on in relief and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two batters to earn the save.
Â
For Oklahoma (0-1), Alex Wise, Sheldon Neuse, and Kyle Mendenhall each had two hits on the day, while Neuse drove in a run and Mendenhall scored the other.
Â
Oklahoma got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as Wise started things off with a single up the middle. He advanced to second in the next at bat and came around to score on Neuse's triple to right field for the early lead.
Â
The Huskies got that run back and more in the top half of the second when, with two outs, Burt singled to right centerfield to get the rally going. After a passed ball, Burt moved up to second base and came home on a Farrell single to right field. On the throw home, Farrell took second, which came in handy, as one batter later Treff doubled down the leftfield line to bring Farrell home for the go-ahead run as the Huskies took a 2-1 lead after one and a half innings.
Â
After the Huskies stranded a pair in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings, Oklahoma evened things up in the bottom of the fifth with some small ball. Â
Â
Mendenhall began the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Domenic DeRenzo. In the next at bat, Jack Flansburg showed bunt, so
David Hopkins came in to cover leaving third base open for Mendenhall to nab. Flansburg then sent a sky high ball to left field deep enough to score Mendenhall to even the score at two.
Â
In the top of the seventh, the Huskies took the lead for good. Oklahoma made a pitching change and freshman
Charlie McConnell took advantage sending a shot down the leftfield line for a double. Two batters later, Madigan drove him in for the ultimate game winning run.
Â
The Huskies will return to action tomorrow, where they will once again faceoff against Oklahoma, this time in a doubleheader in Norman. Action begins at 2 p.m. ET with game two scheduled to begin at the 5 p.m.Â
