BOSTON – One week after splitting a four-game series against No. 30 Oklahoma, earning its first two victories against a Big 12 program in school history, the Northeastern baseball team will make its way to the heart of Texas this weekend to face the Abilene Christian Wildcats in another four-game set. NU will keep its same four-man pitching rotation as last weekend, a staff composed of
Aaron Civale (Friday, Feb. 26, 5 p.m. EST),
Dustin Hunt (Saturday, Feb. 27, 2 p.m. EST),
James Mulry (Saturday, Feb. 27, 5 p.m. EST), and
Will Jahn (Sunday, Feb. 28, 1 p.m. EST).
Â
ALL-TIME AGAINST ABILENE CHRISTIANÂ
Northeastern will be meeting Abilene Christian for the first time in program history on Friday, Feb. 26. This year marks the fourth consecutive season that NU will be squaring off against a team out of the Southland conference. Sine 2013, the Huskies are 4-5 against Southland opponents, winning at least one game during each series played opposite UT Arlington (2013), Houston Baptist (2014), and Incarnate Word (2015).
Â
NORTHEASTERN STARTS 2-0Â
The Huskies sent shockwaves through the college baseball world last weekend when NU upset No. 30 Oklahoma, 3-2, on Opening Day and then again, 5-3, during the first game of the Feb. 20 doubleheader. With both victories in hand, Northeastern had achieved its first 2-0 start since 2010, when the Huskies defeated Davenport (Michigan), 11-5, and St. Bonaventure, 13-1, to begin the decade.
Â
CIVALE SEASON'S FIRST PITCHER OF WEEKÂ
Junior hurler
Aaron Civale received his first career CAA Pitcher of the Week award on Feb. 22 courtesy of a career high, eight-strikeout performance against No. 30 Oklahoma on Opening Day (Feb. 19). Civale, who made his first start after 21 consecutive relief appearances, tossed 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs, both earned, a walk, and a triple. Last season, Civale went 7-2 out of the bullpen, securing six saves for the Huskies.
Â
NU TO MEET RED SOX ON LEAP DAYÂ
Following Northeastern's four-game series at Abilene Christian this weekend, the Huskies will travel to Fort Myers, Florida, on Monday, Feb. 29, to play in their 13th annual spring exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m., while NESN's live TV coverage will begin at 4 p.m. NU is winless in 13 all-time meetings against the MLB club, but pushed the Red Sox to an extra eighth inning during the 2015 game, losing by a score of 2-1. The Huskies combined to strikeout 10 Boston hitters, while
Aaron Civale whiffed David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez, Mike Napoli, and Xander Bogaerts.
Â
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP FOR BURTÂ
Sophomore shortstop
Max Burt carried a hot bat for the Huskies during their season-opening series at No. 30 Oklahoma. Burt hit .438 (seven-for-16) against the Big 12 program, scoring two runs and picking up an RBI. The North Andover, Massachusetts, native went a perfect three-for-three on Opening Day and came through with another two base-knocks for NU during the first game of its Feb. 20 doubleheader against the Sooners.
Â
ROOKIES SWINGING THE BAT TOOÂ
First-year Huskies
Jake Farrell,
Ryan Solomon,
Charlie McConnell,
Cam Walsh, and
David Hopkins each notched their first collegiate hits during Northeastern's series against No. 30 Oklahoma. Farrell was the most well-rounded of the NU rookies, going three-for-nine with three RBIs, a double, four walks, and a run scored. Solomon joined Farrell as the only two Huskies that achieved multi-RBI games during the season-opening series, while Solomon earned his first multi-hit game during the latter portion of the Feb. 20 doubleheader.
Â
MISIASZEK HOLDS ON FOR FIRST WINÂ
Freshman
Andrew Misiaszek finished what junior
Dustin Hunt had started during the Huskies' second game of the season on Feb. 20, celebrating his first career victory after tossing 4.1 innings of relief. Misiaszek entered the game with runners on the corners and two outs during the fifth, but registered his first career strikeout to help NU escape No. 30 Oklahoma's rally. He went on to throw three more strikeouts while allowing just two runs, never relinquishing Northeastern's lead the rest of the way.
Â
FOURS ARE WILDÂ
Four different Northeastern pitchers threw four or more strikeouts during the Huskies' four-game series against No. 30 Oklahoma.
Aaron Civale (eight strikeouts),
Dustin Hunt (four),
Andrew Misiaszek (four), and
James Mulry (four) combined for 20 of Northeastern's 28 strikeouts, which ended up being four more than the Sooners' pitching staff had thrown (24).
RECAPPING THE 2015 SEASONÂ
The Huskies enter the 2016 campaign coming off their best CAA season since their inaugural season in the league (2006). NU won 14 conference games (14-10) last year and finished in the top three of the league standings for the first time in nine years. Northeastern defended its home park, Friedman Diamond, well, winning each of its first 10 CAA home games, a feat only four Division I programs were able to come close to. Overall, the Huskies went 25-30, earning the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and defeating No. 6 William & Mary, 3-2, in the first round.
Â
NU HONORING 1966 CWS TEAM IN 2016Â
Throughout the 2016 season, the Northeastern baseball team will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of its 1966 College World Series team, the finest accomplishment the program has ever witnessed. During the 1966 season, manager John "Tinker" Connelly guided the Huskies to their first-ever Greater Boston College Baseball League (GBCBL) title and its first-ever NCAA District I crown, earning NU the opportunity to travel to Omaha, Nebraska to join the company of Arizona, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, St. John's, Southern California, and Texas.
Â
HUNT GRABS PRESEASON ALL-CAAÂ
A 2015 All-CAA Third Team selection a year ago, junior starter
Dustin Hunt was the lone Northeastern player named to the 2016 Preseason All-CAA Team at the start of the year. Last year, Hunt won five games and tossed a team high, 82 strikeouts, a mark that ranked second most in the CAA. During his career, Hunt has posted 11 victories during 26 starts, and boasts an ERA of 3.70.
Â
HANLEY, CIVALE TAKE HONORABLE MENTIONÂ
Junior infielder
Cam Hanley and junior reliever
Aaron Civale were both received Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention status at the beginning of the 2016 season. Hanley was third on the team last year in batting average (.293), blasting 63 hits and 29 RBIs. Of his 22 extra-base hits, 15 were good for two bases, while four were good for three. Civale will make the transition from reliever to starter during 2016, but carries over a career ERA of 3.22. As a sophomore bullpen specialist, Civale went 7-2 and garnered six saves, striking out 41 batters during 41.2 innings on the hill.
Â
HUSKIES PICKED THIRD IN PRESEASON POLLÂ
Northeastern tied Elon for the third spot in the 2016 CAA Baseball Preseason coaches' poll, receiving 45 points. Under first-year head coach
Mike Glavine, NU outdid its 2015 preseason allocation, improving on its projected fifth-place finish by two positions, ending the year in sole possession of third place. UNCW was picked to defend its CAA championship, receiving 63 points and seven out of eight first-place votes, while College of Charleston was tabbed to finish second, raking in 55 points.
Â
RETURNING FOR NORTHEASTERNÂ
Although the Huskies lost
Michael Foster (.343 avg., 70 hits, 35 RBIs) and
Rob Fonseca (.274 avg., 15 home runs, 41 RBIs) to the Chicago Cubs (16th round) and Seattle Mariners (21st round), respectively, in the 2015 MLB Draft, NU maintains a crew of experienced bats. Junior co-captain
Pat Madigan, who hit .313 last season, and
Cam Hanley are projected to lead the way for the Huskies' offense, while sophomores
Nolan Lang (.285 avg.) and
Max Burt (.238 avg., 45 hits) are both coming off well-rounded rookie campaigns. Senior
Josh Treff is team captain for a second season in 2016 and provides Northeastern with tremendous IQ behind the dish, serving as an asset to hard-hurlers
Aaron Civale (7-2, six saves, 3.24 ERA),
Dustin Hunt (5-5, 4.96 ERA),
James Mulry (3-8, 5.71 ERA),
Mike Fitzgerald (four saves, 1.54 ERA), and
Isaac Lippert (four saves, 4.60 ERA). NU returns three All-CAA selections from a year ago, including
Keith Kelly (.222 avg.), Hunt, and Civale.
