Pre-game Interview with Isaac Lippert |
Post-game Interview with Mike GlavineFORT MYERS, Fla. –
Josh Treff's first-inning triple to deep center was the first of six hits for the Northeastern baseball team against the Boston Red Sox on Monday afternoon as the Huskies lost, 8-3, in their 13th annual spring exhibition game versus the MLB club at Jet Blue Park.
Â
Treff was one of four NU players that went one-for-two against the Sox, joining fellow Huskies
Cam Hanley,
Charlie McConnell, and
Nick Fanneron.
Nolan Lang and
Mike Piscopo each recorded hits during their only at-bats of the day, while Piscopo also picked up a strikeout on the mound during the home half of the fifth.
Â
Northeastern head coach
Mike Glavine cycled 22 of his players into the seven-inning game, finding creative ways to assure as many Huskies as possible made their way onto the field.
Â
Sophomore right-hander
Brian Christian received the start for the Huskies opposite Boston's Sean O'Sullivan. Both pitchers tossed the opening two innings, while Christian was followed by
Isaac Lippert (0.1 IP),
Tyler Brown (1.2 IP), Piscopo (1.0 IP), and
Kevin Martinis (1.0 IP).
Â
Brown collected all five of his outs without letting a run cross the plate, finishing his line with a strikeout and two walks. Entering the game with the bases loaded and one out in the third, Brown worked his way out of the jam, retiring the side before posting a scoreless frame in the fourth.
Â
After the Red Sox had built a 5-0 lead courtesy of two runs in the first, two in the second, and one in the third, Northeastern was able to wake up its bats during the top of the fifth. McConnell smacked an RBI single then that drove in
Cam Walsh, cutting Boston's lead to 5-1.
Â
Although the Red Sox would tack on two more runs in the fifth to increase their advantage to 7-1, NU answered back with two runs during the top of the sixth to reduce the gap down to four. Fanneron scored first on
Ryan Solomon's 3-6 fielder's choice that claimed
Jake Farrell at second base. Soon after,
David Hopkins took a fourth ball from Boston's Danny Rosenbaum with the bases loaded, bringing the score to 7-3.
Â
Defensively, Northeastern turned two double plays against the Red Sox: a 6-4-3 turned by
Max Burt,
Keith Kelly, and Hanley, and a 5-4 executed by Solomon and McConnell.
Â
NU will return to Florida on Saturday, March 5, to begin a three-game, neutral-site series against Cornell in Winter Haven. First pitch between the Huskies and the Big Red is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Chain of Lakes Park, the former spring training site of the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.
