Josh Treff solo shot proved to be the game winner as the Northeastern baseball team downed Washington State 5-3 in the series opener on Thursday night. The victory was Northeastern's first ever over a Pac-12 opponent in program history.
Â
Treff finished the night 1-for-4, with his one hit, coming in the fourth inning, counting for a lot in the victory.
Keith Kelly finished the game 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot scoring one and extending his on base streak to 12 games, while seven different Huskies in the lineup connected on a hit and five different Huskies crossed the plate in the win.
Â
Will Jahn got the start for Northeastern (7-5) and was replaced on the bump by
Brian Christian in the fourth inning, who came away with his first win of the season. Freshman
Andrew Misiaszek finished the game out with three scoreless innings to come away with his first career save.
Â
Washington State (4-9) also had seven different batters come away with a hit, including three who finished with a multi-hit day. Ian Hamilton earned his fourth loss of the year after 6.2 innings on the mound allowing four runs, just one earned, and striking out nine.
Â
Northeastern got on top first taking advantage of a couple of first inning miscues by the Cougars. The Huskies' rally began with two outs on the scoreboard as
Pat Madigan was hit by a pitch, and moved all the way up to third base in the next at bat via a throwing error by WSU's third baseman.
Â
The next batter up meant another Washington State error as
Nolan Lang reached on an error by the Cougar first baseman that advanced
Cam Hanley to third and brought Madigan across as the first run of the day.
Â
An infield chopper by
Zach Perry brought Hanley home and moved Lang to third. Lang came across in the next at bat as
Max Burt beat out an infield single to the shortstop to keep the inning going and improve the Husky lead to three.
Â
But the Cougars answered back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own, using back to back singles to left to plate the first couple of runs, and added one more to the scoreboard after a fielding error by Lang.
Â
After a couple of scoreless innings, Treff broke the game open with a solo shot down the leftfield line on a 2-2 pitch to give the Huskies the 4-3 advantage.
Â
In the bottom half of the frame, after Jahn allowed a pair to reach, he was replaced on the mound by Christian. Christian walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, but the Huskies accomplished the elusive triple play, this one of the 4-6-3 variety to get out of the inning.
Â
A late error by Washington State helped Northeastern to tack on an insurance run in the ninth inning of play. After Kelly started the inning off with a double down the leftfield line,
Jake Farrell drove him in on a single with the help of another error on the Cougar first baseman to give the Huskies a 5-3 lead heading into the final half inning of play.
Â
In the bottom half of the frame, Misiaszek sat down the Cougars 1-2-3 to round out his third straight scoreless inning and pick up the save.
Â
The Huskies will return to the diamond on Friday night, once again at 7 p.m. when they face off against Washington State in the second of the four weekend games.Â
