Aaron Civale (3-1) started out on the hill for NU, striking out 11 Cougars, a new career-high, and walking just one over 7.2 innings, while giving up seven hits and four runs – all earned.
Keith Kelly and
Pat Madigan both had two hits, while
Josh Treff drove in
Charlie McConnell in the second inning - the Huskies' sole run of the game.
The rookie led off the top of the second with his first of three walks and moved to third after a
Cam Hanley single to center field. After Treff's double down the left field line, past a diving third baseman, McConnell touched home to give the Huskies the 1-0 edge.
The NU lead held steady until the bottom of the seventh when Washington State's Weston Hatten sent a 3-2 fastball from Civale over the left center field fence to own the score, 2-1.
Northeastern had a chance to re-gain the advantage at the top of the eighth when it loaded the bases for
Shane Allen. The Cougars got the junior to ground out at third to end the Huskies' scoring threat.
Civale ran into more trouble at the bottom of the eighth when Dugan Shirer singled up the middle to drive in a pair of runs to stretch the game, 4-1.
The Huskies brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but
Jake Farrell flied out to center to end the ball game.
