Infographic (Game Two)PULLMAN, Wash. – Two Washington State crooked numbers of five runs or more cast a shadow over what was a well-played doubleheader Sunday afternoon by the Northeastern baseball team as the Huskies came up empty in the win column against the Cougars, 7-2, in game one and 8-1 in a rain-shortened, five-inning affair.
Â
Four of the Huskies' five hits during game one landed for two bases. Freshman outfielder
Jake Farrell led the NU bats with two doubles, scoring on fellow first-year
Charlie McConnell's RBI double in the top of the first.
Â
Nolan Lang also connected on a timely two-bagger down the left-field line in the sixth, sending
Pat Madigan to third base after a one-out single. Madigan came into score on an RBI 6-3 groundout by McConnell, who increased his season RBI count to four by the end of the first game.
Â
Dustin Hunt steamrolled over the Washington State lineup during his first pass through, striking out five of the first eight batters he faced. However, Hunt's afternoon turned for the worse in the bottom of the fourth as each of the first five Cougars batters reached safely and eventually scored, costing the Northeastern hurler five earned runs and the losing decision. Hunt would have been charged with more runs had it not been for NU catcher
Josh Treff tagging Shane Matheny out at the plate later in the frame.
Â
Tyler Robinson relieved Hunt after 3.1 innings, but not before the junior had tossed six strikeouts. Upon entering the game, Robinson retired each of the first six WSU batters he saw, surrendering an RBI double to Matheny in the sixth that left Washington State ahead, 6-2. Matheny went on to drive in another run during the eighth inning against
Isaac Lippert, scoring Dugan Shirer on an RBI single to center.
Â
Rain began to fall heavily during the late innings of game one and reared its head again during the middle innings of game two. Hail littered the field between the fifth and sixth innings, causing the umpires to call the game as it stood, 8-1, in favor of the Cougars.
Â
Similar to game one, Northeastern (7-8) jumped out to a first-inning lead courtesy of
Keith Kelly's strategic base running. Kelly, who extended his reached-base streak to a 15th consecutive game, led off the game with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, made it to third on Lang's sac-bunt, and scored on Madigan's RBI 6-3 groundout.
Â
The Huskies' defense turned double plays during the first and second innings of Sunday's second game. Lang and teammate
Ryan Solomon went across the diamond, 5-3-5, to end the first, while
James Mulry,
Max Burt, and Solomon completed a 1-6-3 double play to end the second.
Â
Washington State (7-9) tied the game in the third after an RBI unassisted groundout to first by Matheny. The Cougars then added to their lead in the fourth on a throwing error by Treff before scoring six runs against Mulry,
Andrew Misiaszek, and
Mike Fitzgerald in the fifth.
Â
Northeastern will return to the east coast on Friday, March 18, for the Huskies' 2016 home opener against Buffalo. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
