InfographicBROOKLINE, Mass. – Two doubles by junior
Cam Hanley plated all three of the Northeastern baseball team's runs on Saturday at Friedman Diamond despite the Huskies being edged out by Buffalo, 6-3, during the second game of the series.
Â
Hanley pulled balls down the right-field line all afternoon, pounding an RBI double in the second, a two-RBI double in the sixth, and a foul ball in the ninth that had it stayed fair, would have been the first baseman's first homer of the season. He reached safely during each of his four trips to the plate, going two-for-two with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
Â
Keith Kelly's 16-game reached base streak came to an unfortunate end on Saturday as the Huskies' leadoff man went hitless during five plate appearances. Outfielder
Pat Madigan knocked two hits, including a double, off the Bulls' pitching staff, while
Charlie McConnell recorded a base hit for the third consecutive game.
Â
James Mulry made it through five full innings on the mound for Northeastern (8-9), tossing 99 pitches and allowing four runs, three earned. Two errors by the Huskies extended Mulry's first inning and prevented the senior from advancing well beyond the fifth.
Â
Freshman
Andrew Misiaszek threw scoreless sixth and seventh innings and preserved Northeastern's one-run deficit until the eighth, when he surrendered a two-RBI double to the Bulls' Bobby Sheppard.
Brian Christian assured the Huskies' deficit remained just three heading into the final half-inning, needing just 10 pitches to retire the Bulls in the ninth.
Â
Five Buffalo (6-8) hits belonged to Sheppard, who finished the day with a double, a run, and three RBIs. Vinny Mallaro boosted the Bulls' lead to 4-1 in the fifth on a two-RBI double down the left-field line, while center fielder Alex Thrower scored twice in addition to going one-for-three out of the nine spot.
Â
The Bulls' starter Charlie Sobieraski improved to 3-1 on the season, striking out four, walking five, and conceding three runs, all earned. Buffalo relievers Ben Hartz and Brandon Mumaw combined to allow one Northeastern hit during the final three innings.
Â
Trailing the Bulls, 2-0, in the second, NU catcher
Josh Treff walked on five pitches and soon after took off for second base, earning his first stolen base of the season. During the next at-bat, Hanley rocked a double down the line, scoring Treff easily to make the score, 2-1.
Â
After hitting a one-out single to left in the fourth, McConnell proceeded to steal second and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Both Hanley and
Max Burt had opportunities to bring McConnell in as the tying run, but Hanley's four-pitch walk was followed by Burt's inning-ending groundout to short.
Â
Although Mallaro's two-RBI double put Buffalo ahead, 4-1, in the fifth, NU answered back during the next inning.
Ryan Solomon and McConnell earned consecutive one-out walks and, two batters later, charged home on Hanley's second double of the game, bringing Northeastern to within one again at 4-3.
Â
In the eighth, Misaszek sandwiched his third and fourth strikeouts around a one-out walk to Ben Vey, but proceeded to give up a single to Thrower and double to Sheppard that secured Buffalo's win, 6-3.
Â
Northeastern will close out its three-game weekend series against the Bulls on Sunday, March 20, at 12 p.m.
