InfographicBROOKLINE, Mass. – Scoreless pitching by both bullpens preserved Massachusetts' 3-2 lead against the Northeastern baseball team from the fourth inning on as NU dropped a windy non-conference game Tuesday at Friedman Diamond by the same score.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek and
Tyler Robinson combined to strike out nine, walk none, and earn the final 17 outs while surrendering just one hit each. Misiaszek's six strikeouts were good enough for a career high, raising the freshman's season count to 22, the most among NU relievers.
Â
Fellow Northeastern rookies
Charlie McConnell,
Cam Walsh, and
Michael Geaslen each chipped hits off the Minutemen's hurlers on Tuesday, uniting for half of the Huskies' eight base knocks. McConnell finished with the same number of hits as he did stolen bases, recording two in each category. Geaslen's fourth-inning single also charted the freshman's first career RBI, scoring
Jake Farrell from third to bring NU within a run.
Â
Mason Koppens provided Northeastern (10-12) with its lone extra-base hit of the game, pummeling a leadoff triple over UMass right fielder Hunter Carey's head in the bottom of the third.
Max Burt reached base twice after being hit with pitches on two separate occasions.
Â
Gusting winds of more than 30 miles per hour at Friedman Diamond challenged both defenses' ability to routinely field fly balls. Koppens made a variety of sliding catches in center field on wind-directed balls, while corner outfielders
Pat Madigan and Walsh frequently had to charge towards the infield to retrieve shallow flies.
Â
Vinny Scifo and John Jennings registered two hits apiece for Massachusetts (5-10), while Bryce Maher and Jon Avallone each provided hits that drove in runs for the Minutemen. Casey Aubin started for UMass and struck out four during 5.1 innings on the mound en route to the victory.
Â
Koppens' triple to start the home half of the third gave the Huskies their first runner in scoring position and left NU in great position to tie the game at 1-1. Two batters later, McConnell sent a rocket to short that landed for an infield single, allowing Koppens to score from third.
Â
Following a leadoff walk issued by Christian to Carey, Maher tripled to deep right field, sending the Minutemen in front, 2-1. After hitting Bare with a pitch and falling behind 2-0 to Avallone, Christian was relieved by Misiaszek, who worked the count back to 2-2 before relinquishing an RBI single.
Â
Although Walsh grounded into a 6-3 double play midway through the bottom of the fourth inning, Farrell had managed to move up a base from second to third. Geaslen brought home Farrell on an RBI single over the second baseman's head, cutting the Minutemen's lead to 3-2.
Â
Misiaszek retired nine consecutive batters upon entering in the fourth, keeping Northeastern within one through the seventh. Two strikeouts thrown by Robinson in the eighth helped the sophomore battle back from a leadoff triple down, but NU was unable to string hits together during the later innings to bring the tying run home.
Â
Northeastern will travel to Rhode Island on Wednesday, March 30, for a 3 p.m. road game against the Rams.
Nate Borges (1-1, 3.72 ERA) is projected to start for the Huskies.Â
