InfographicKINGSTON, R.I. – Opening Wednesday's game at Rhode Island with four straight scoreless frames, junior right-hander
Nate Borges propelled the Northeastern baseball team to a 5-0 lead it would never relinquish as the Huskies picked up a 6-2 road win at Bill Beck Field.
Â
Borges struck out three and walked one during five full innings on the mound for the Huskies, surrendering his only run of the game on a balk with two outs in the fifth.
Will Jahn closed
Tyler Brown's relief account in the seventh, retiring seven of the eight batters he faced en route to his first career save.
Â
Eight different players combined to swing Northeastern's 11 hits on Wednesday, while seven of those hits fell among the top four hitters in the NU lineup. Batting clean-up for the first time this season,
Keith Kelly reached safely during four of his five plate appearances, crushing his third homer of the season in addition to walking twice.
Â
Charlie McConnell went two-for-four, scored twice, and stole two bags, remaining perfect at 12-for-12 in steal attempts during his rookie campaign. Northeastern (11-12) put on a base-running clinic Wednesday as
Mason Koppens,
David Hopkins, and
Pat Madigan each recorded thefts by the end of the day.
Â
McConnell started the first inning for NU with a leadoff walk and was bunted to second by Koppens, who carved the slow roller into a single as Rhode Island (9-12) failed to cover first base. After stealing third, McConnell scored on Madigan's 5-4-3 double play ball, helping NU strike first, 1-0. Following back-to-back singles by Kelly and Allen that sent Northeastern in front, 2-0,
Max Burt dialed up an RBI three-bagger through the gap in left center, rounding out a three-run, four-hit frame for the Huskies.
Â
NU continued the theme of scoring with two outs as the game went on. Kelly connected on a solo shot beyond the wall in right with two outs in the top of the third, while Hopkins' RBI double in the fourth scored
Josh Treff with two outs and also gave the Huskies a 5-0 advantage.
Â
Borges recovered nicely from three straight Rhode Island singles in the bottom of the fifth, but a two-out balk allowed the Rams' Matt O'Neil to touch home, reducing Northeastern's lead to 5-1. URI brought an unearned run across in the sixth to cut the Huskies' lead to 5-2, but a ninth-inning NU rally led by McConnell tacked on a key insurance run that gave Jahn plenty of room to work with to secure the save.
Â
Northeastern will begin a three-game CAA series against UNCW at home on Friday, April 1. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
