WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Although the Northeastern baseball team tallied more runs (11) than Cornell (seven) during Saturday's neutral-site doubleheader at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, the Huskies were only able to secure one victory as NU won game one, 6-0, before losing game two, 7-5.

The two programs alternated home-team designations at Chain of Lakes Park, the former spring training facility of the Boston Red Sox (1966-1992) and the Cleveland Indians (1993-2008). Cornell, playing in its first game of the 2016 season, batted last during game one, while the Huskies served as the home team during game two.

Northeastern (5-4) improved to 3-0 this season in series-opening games behind junior starter Aaron Civale, who threw seven scoreless innings in the 1 p.m. game en route to his third victory of the year. Andrew Misiaszek relieved Civale at the start of the eighth inning, posting zeros during the final two frames to preserve the Huskies' first shutout of the season.

Cornell (0-1) started right-hander Paul Balestrieri, who received the game one loss.

NU shut out three opponents during 2015, celebrating its most recent on April 17 against NYIT (W, 7-0).

After holding the Big Red scoreless during game one, Cornell (1-1) jumped out to a 3-0, first-inning lead against Dustin Hunt during game two courtesy of two singles and two extra-base hits. Hunt's day came to an end two batters into the sixth with the Huskies trailing, 5-1, but Northeastern (5-5) steadily chipped away at the deficit, scoring four runs down the stretch to tie Cornell, 5-5, after eight innings.

Mike Fitzgerald took the hill for NU in the ninth, but surrendered a two-run home run to the Big Red's Cole Rutherford that left Cornell in front for good, 7-5.

Northeastern will wrap up its three-game series against Cornell at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida, on Sunday, March 6, at 10 a.m.
