WINTER HAVEN, Fla. –
Mason Koppens' bases-clearing triple added the icing to the cake during a seven-run fifth inning for the Northeastern baseball team on Sunday morning as the Huskies shut out Cornell for a second time, 11-0, in the series finale at Chain of Lakes Park. The game was called midway through the seventh inning per the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational mercy rule, suspending any contest at the conclusion of seven innings in the event of a 10-run lead of more.
Â
With the win, Northeastern (6-5) claimed hold to its first multi-game series victory of the 2016 season, having split previous four-game sets this year against No. 30 Oklahoma and Abilene Christian.
Â
Senior left-hander
James Mulry thwarted the Big Red's hitters all morning long, tossing six shutout innings.
Mike Piscopo relieved Mulry at the start of the seventh, facing two batters before
Isaac Lippert came in to earn the final three outs of the game.
Â
Fielding miscues rattled Cornell (1-2) during much of the game, allowing Northeastern to extend rallies and post two crooked numbers in the third (four runs) and fifth (seven) innings.
Â
After NU had loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, the Big Red's second baseman threw
Cam Hanley's ground ball away, letting
Keith Kelly score the Huskies' first run of the game. NU tacked on two more runs on an RBI single by
Nolan Lang and a sacrifice fly by
Zach Perry, but a second erred throw by the Cornell infield allowed Lang to touch the plate for the Huskies' fourth run of the frame.
Â
Northeastern loaded the bases just three batters into the fifth inning after a single by
Pat Madigan, a walk to Hanley, and a single by Lang. Without needing to swing the bat, NU took a 5-0 lead on a wild pitch before going ahead, 6-0, after back-to-back walks issued to Perry and
Josh Treff. The Huskies proceeded to cash in on Koppens' three-RBI triple to deep right field, powering Northeastern to a 9-0 advantage.
Â
After a great display of patience, NU loaded the bases again in the fifth following two straight walks issued to Kelly and Farrell. A third defensive blunder by the Big Red left Northeastern comfortably ahead, 11-0.
Â
The Huskies will remain on the road next week, beginning a four-game series at Washington State on Thursday, March 10.
