Post-game Interview
BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Dustin Hunt's career high, 10 strikeouts, was unfortunately paired with a no decision during Sunday's rubber match at Friedman Diamond as the Northeastern baseball team suffered a 3-2 setback against Elon in extra innings.
Â
Trailing the Phoenix for the first time in the 10th, the Huskies' two-out rally during the bottom of the frame ended with both the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Following
Max Burt's base hit that kept Northeastern's hopes alive, Elon closer Chris Hall threw
Keith Kelly's infield single away at first, allowing both NU runners to move up an extra base. The Huskies needed a third hit out of
Zach Perry if they were to prolong the game, but the NU cleanup hitter grounded out to second for the final out.
Â
Hunt threw over the century mark (108 pitches) for the second consecutive week and allowed just four hits, one more than his season low. The six-foot-five right-hander walked two and was in line for the victory until Elon's Tyler McVicar hit the game-tying home run in the top of the seventh. Prior to Sunday, Hunt had thrown nine strikeouts on four different occasions, but had never reached double digits.
Â
Tyler Robinson pitched a spotless two innings of relief for Northeastern (15-14, 4-4 CAA) with the exception of a one-out walk in the ninth.
Mike Fitzgerald took over at the start of the 10th, but Kory Shumate delivered the eventual game-winning single through the right side, scoring Will Nance from second.
Â
Kelly and Perry combined for four of the Huskies' seven hits, with Perry bringing NU its first run on a first-inning double through the gap in left center. Northeastern threatened to tack on more runs following Perry's double with two runners in scoring position, but Elon starter Jordan Barrett struck out
Pat Madigan and
Nolan Lang, back-to-back, to end the inning.
Â
The Phoenix drew level in the second on Shumate's RBI single up the middle. McVicar scored cleanly before NU center fielder
Mason Koppens caught Nance in an inning-ending rundown on the same play. Hunt proceeded to retire six in a row, keeping the game knotted at 1-1.
Â
After singling to leadoff the bottom of the sixth, Kelly tagged and went to second on Perry's foul out down the right-field line. Madigan then hit an infield single to short before Lang clubbed a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Kelly to up Northeastern's lead to 2-1.
Â
McVicar spoiled Hunt's winning decision with a one-out solo homer that carried over the wall in right center.
Â
Northeastern will wrap up its seven-game home stand on Wednesday, April 13, against Quinnipiac. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
