NEWARK, Del. – Two of
Josh Treff's three doubles hugged the foul lines at Bob Hannah Stadium and landed for RBIs on Saturday afternoon as the Northeastern baseball team scored three runs during the final two innings to top Delaware, 6-3.
Â
Treff put the Huskies on the scoreboard for the first time in the second inning, providing the latter portion of back-to-back doubles by he and first baseman
Jake Farrell. Although Treff's two-out double in the sixth ended without a chance to round third and score, his two-bagger down the left-field line in the eighth successfully scored
Nolan Lang, distancing NU by two runs at 5-3.
Â
Senior left-hander
James Mulry matched his career-long outing of seven full innings pitched, earning his second victory of the season despite throwing his final pitch with the game tied at 3-3. Mulry began his eighth start of the year with four straight scoreless innings and finished with three strikeouts, three walks, and three runs allowed, only two of which were earned.
Â
NU relievers
Andrew Misiaszek and
Mike Fitzgerald pitched a spotless eighth and ninth inning, respectively, combining for no hits, no runs, and three strikeouts.
Max Burt's solo home run in the top of the ninth gave Fitzgerald an extra run of breathing room to work with as the Huskies' closer collected his sixth save of the year.
Â
With Saturday's victory, Northeastern (18-14, 6-4 CAA) guaranteed its second series win of the conference season, having already defeated the Blue Hens by a score of 6-1 on Friday. Defensive woes plagued Delaware (21-13, 4-7 CAA) for the second straight game as the Blue Hens committed three errors, resulting in two unearned NU runs.
Â
Delaware starter Brandon Walter matched Mulry's time on the mound, scattering five hits while striking out five as well. Colman Vila picked up the loss after being credited with all three of the Huskies' late-inning runs.
Â
With
Keith Kelly and
Pat Madigan aboard in the top of the third,
Zach Perry knocked a 1-0 pitch through the right side of the infield for an RBI single, putting the Huskies in front, 2-0. After a wild pitch had allowed both Madigan and Perry to move into scoring position, Farrell managed to reach on a bobbled ball at first, allowing Perry to score to give Northeastern a 3-0 lead.
Â
A miscue by
Charlie McConnell in center field cost Mulry the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning as Kyle Baker took third base and Kevin Mohollen came around from first to score. In the sixth, Mulry appeared to have thwarted a leadoff double by Jordan Glover with two consecutive groundouts, one resulting in an RBI, but a triple by Jeremy Ake and an RBI single by Doug Trimple knotted the game at 3-3.
Â
McConnell's fifth-inning error was nulled out by Delaware in the eighth, when the Blue Hens right fielder misplayed Lang's single, allowing Madigan to score from first. Treff's RBI double down the left-field line preceded Burt's homer in the ninth, rounding out what was a six-run day for the Huskies.
Â
Northeastern and Delaware will play the series finale on Sunday, April 17, at 1 p.m.
Dustin Hunt (3-2, 3.45 ERA) is anticipated to start for the Huskies.
