NU muscles 18 hits, sweeps Delaware with 14-0 win

NEWARK, Del. – Pat Madigan's three-RBI triple in the eighth inning left the junior outfielder a double shy of the cycle on Sunday afternoon as the Northeastern baseball team completed the series sweep of Delaware with a 14-0 victory at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Twelve different batters combined to produce the Huskies' 18 hits, the second most NU has tallied this season behind its program record, 29, set on March 27 against James Madison. Madigan and fellow co-captain Josh Treff combined to notch four of Northeastern's eight extra-base hits, which did result in a season high.

The Huskies' bottom of the order came through in a big way on Sunday as the last three spots in the lineup together went eight-for-14, reaching base 11 times. Treff rocked a double and an RBI triple out of the seven hole, Cam Walsh powered an RBI triple and scored twice out of the eight spot, and nine-hitter Mason Koppens went three-for-four with a double, two walks, and three runs. Shane Allen also pinched hit for Walsh in the top of the ninth, sending a first-pitch double to center field.

Overshadowed by the Huskies' offensive performance was Dustin Hunt's brilliant display on the mound. Hunt retired 17 of the first 19 Delaware batters he faced, exiting the game at the start of the seventh with NU comfortably ahead by nine runs. The junior picked up the fourth combined shutout of his career and second in three appearances, striking out five while walking two and surrendering just two hits.

Northeastern (19-14, 7-4 CAA) dug into the Blue Hens' starter Kyle Hinton early, capitalizing on leadoff walks issued to Zach Perry and Keith Kelly in the second and third innings, respectively. Treff's triple in the top of the second scored Perry easily to put the Huskies on the board, while Kelly had the luxury of trotting home on Madigan's third home run of the season.

With a 3-0 lead, NU collectively hit for the cycle during four consecutive at-bats in the fifth inning. Jake Farrell initiated the sequence with a solo homer to right center, before Treff followed with his team-leading ninth double of the year. Walsh then brought home Treff on an RBI triple to left center and Koppens completed the cycle with an RBI infield single, scoring Walsh to give Northeastern a 6-0 advantage.

Koppens came through again with a leadoff double in the seventh and scored the Huskies' eighth run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Kelly. After being plunked by a 1-1 pitch that same inning, Max Burt went from first to third on an infield single by Madigan and eventually made it home during the next at-bat on an RBI single by Perry.

David Hopkins loaded the bases in the eighth when his pinch-hit single moved Walsh to third and Koppens to second. With two outs, Nick Fanneron collected his sixth RBI of the week with a base hit to center before Madigan cracked the game open with a bases-clearing triple, leaving NU considerably in front, 13-0. Ryan Solomon added a 14th run for the Huskies on a pinch-hit single up the middle, his first RBI since Feb. 20.

With the series sweep of Delaware (21-14, 4-8 CAA), Northeastern moves into sole possession of second place in the CAA standings with a 7-4 record. The Huskies will return to Friedman Diamond on Tuesday, April 19, for a 3 p.m. home game against Bryant before facing Boston College in the 2016 Beanpot championship game on Wednesday, April 20, at 5:30 p.m. in Northborough, Massachusetts.
