Post-game InterviewBROOKLINE, Mass. –
Tyler Robinson polished off
Dustin Hunt's seven scoreless innings with two of his own down the stretch during Saturday afternoon's game at Friedman Diamond as the Northeastern baseball team shut out UNCW, the top offensive team in the CAA, by a score of 3-0.
Â
Rain reduced Saturday's doubleheader from two games to one and also pushed the start time back by four hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Despite a soggy morning that made for wet field conditions, the majority of the game was played under fair skies with the sun popping out during the final few innings.Â
Â
Neither Hunt nor Robinson allowed the Seahawks to reach third base during the contest as the two NU pitchers limited UNCW to just seven hits. Hunt struck out seven and walked only one, while Robinson collected the save, striking out Zack Canada, swinging, to end the ball game.
Â
With Saturday's 3-0 victory, Northeastern (13-12, 3-2 CAA) has now blanked four of its opponents this season. The Huskies are also the first program this year to post a shutout against UNCW (15-9, 2-2 CAA), a team that entered the day averaging 9.0 runs per game.
Â
Charlie McConnell went two-for-four out of the leadoff spot for NU, clubbing his first career home run down the right-field line in the fifth. McConnell also scored on one of
Pat Madigan's two singles, providing the Huskies with an all-important insurance run in the seventh.
Â
Shortstop
Max Burt joined McConnell in protecting the left side of the infield throughout the afternoon. Burt made an incredible diving stop in the fifth that kept Nick Feight's grounder up the middle in the infield for a challenging 6-3 putout.
Â
Keith Kelly,
Cam Walsh, and
Jake Farrell each recorded hits for the Huskies. Kelly improved his hitting streak to eight straight games, while Walsh has now registered a base knock during each of his last six games. Madigan's multi-hit day was the junior's seventh of the season and increased his active hit streak to nine in a row.
Â
Casey Golden led UNCW with three hits, including a double, while Brian Mims doubled twice, both times off Hunt. The Seahawks' freshman starter, Alex Royalty, struck out seven during 6.1 innings on the hill, walking none but surrendering two earned runs en route to his second loss of the year (5-2).
Â
Due to rain impacting the postponement of Saturday's game two, the series finale between Northeastern and UNCW has been rescheduled for Sunday, April 3, at 12 p.m. Fans are encouraged to check the Huskies' Twitter account, @GoNUbaseball, in addition to GoNU.com for updates on the status of Sunday's game.
