Post-game Interview
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Erasing a 4-0 deficit by way of a five-run fifth inning, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to hold onto its mid-game lead as William & Mary came from behind to take the second game of the series, 8-5, on Saturday at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Ascending to the second spot in the Huskies' batting order,
Mason Koppens went two-for-four, breaking through with Northeastern's first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth. The following inning, Koppens legged out a bunt single that drove home
David Hopkins, helping NU come all the way back to tie the game at 4-4.
James Mulry was effective early on but fell behind in the third inning when Cullen Large hit a two-run homer for the Tribe. Mulry struck out four but walked five during 4.1 innings on the mound and allowed four runs, only two of which were earned.
Hits became contagious for Northeastern (19-18, 7-6 CAA) in the fifth inning after
Max Burt had cracked a double down the left-field line, moving he and
Nolan Lang into scoring position.
Cam Walsh proceeded to bring both runners home on a two-RBI single up the middle, halving the Tribe's lead from 4-0 to 4-2.
Â
Charlie McConnell ended William & Mary starter Bodie Sheehan's day following his fifth-inning at-bat when he laced an RBI single to left center, scoring
Ryan Solomon from second and bumping Hopkins over to third. After Koppens' bunt had tied the game,
Keith Kelly sent the first pitch he saw from Mitchell Aker through the right side, giving Northeastern its first lead at 5-4.
Â
Having loaded the bases in the seventh, William & Mary (19-20, 8-5 CAA) pulled even with Northeastern on a bases-loaded walk by
Andrew Misiaszek. Zach Pearson's ground ball to the edge of the infield left Burt without a play at second base, allowing the Tribe to retake the lead at 6-5.
Â
With the same score in the eighth, the Huskies' decision to intentionally walk Charley Gould with a runner on second backfired as Miconi doubled off
Mike Fitzgerald, giving William & Mary a three-run cushion at 8-5 with six defensive outs left to claim.
Â
Northeastern will look to avoid the series sweep on Sunday, April 24, when the Huskies and the Tribe meet for the weekend finale at 12 p.m.
