Post-game Interview
BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Dustin Hunt had a one-hitter working through six innings during Sunday's series finale between the Northeastern baseball team and William & Mary, but the Tribe's Josh Smith drove in three runs during the final two frames, lifting the visitors past the Huskies, 3-0, at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Hunt threw eight strikeouts and caught three batters looking, upping his season totals in both categories to 58 and a league-leading 25, respectively. The junior from Andover, Massachusetts, battled back from a leadoff single down in the seventh and earned two straight outs before Smith broke the scoreless tie with a two-run homer down the left-field line.
Â
Smith picked up his third RBI of the game off NU reliever
Tyler Robinson in the ninth, singling Charley Gould home from second base. Robinson charted three strikeouts and no walks during the final two innings.
Â
Josh Treff and
Charlie McConnell provided Northeastern (19-19, 7-7 CAA) with an opportunity to respond to Smith's homer in the bottom of the seventh. Treff laced a one-out single to left and moved into scoring position on McConnell's fifth double of the season. However,
Keith Kelly came in just under a 1-1 pitch from William & Mary starter Dan Powers, flying out to center before NU could chip away at the deficit.
Â
Treff added a two-out single to his account in the bottom of the ninth, finishing the day two-for-three at the plate with a walk.
Â
Northeastern matched William & Mary (20-20, 9-5 CAA) in hits with six, but left nine runners on base to the Tribe's five.
Nolan Lang and
Jake Farrell each belted singles out of the five and six spots, respectively, in the NU batting order.
Â
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, April 29, when NU hosts Central Connecticut State at 3 p.m. Northeastern will also welcome its 1966 College World Series team back to Friedman Diamond prior to the Huskies' April 30 doubleheader. A special ceremony honoring the 1966 Northeastern baseball team will begin at 10:30 a.m.
