BROOKLINE, Mass. –
James Mulry's seven strikeouts, one walk, and one unearned run were certainly worthy of a winning decision on Saturday afternoon despite not being the case as the Northeastern baseball team lost a 2-0 pitcher's duel at home against Elon.
Â
Picking up his third quality start of the season, Mulry retired each of the first nine hitters he faced, striking out six during his first trip through the visitor's batting order. After allowing just two hits in the fourth, including an RBI single to the Phoenix's Tyler McVicar, Mulry came back to toss a one-two-three fifth inning before surviving a bases-loaded jam unscathed in the sixth.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek entered the game for Northeastern (15-13, 4-3 CAA) in the seventh, surrendering just one unearned run on three hits before ringing up the last seven Elon batters of the game. Only one of the freshman reliever's three hits ended up leaving the infield, with NU shortstop
Max Burt scooping up Ryne Ogren's RBI single at the edge of the diamond. Misiaszek also struck out four and walked none.
Â
Jake Farrell and Burt registered the only two hits of the game for the Huskies. Farrell cracked a single down the third-base line in the second, while Burt too powered a ball down the left-field line for a leadoff double in the seventh.
Â
Michael Elefante pitched brilliantly for Elon (11-20, 3-7 CAA), striking out 11 during eight scoreless innings on the mound while walking just two. Following a two-out walk issued to
Mason Koppens in the second, Elefante retired 19 of the next 20 NU batters he faced before Chris Hall came on in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the year.
Â
After Mulry had closed the first inning with back-to-back strikeouts, Elefante sandwiched three strikeouts around a hit-by-pitch to
Keith Kelly and a four-pitch walk to
Zach Perry. Farrell and Koppens had the Huskies thinking two-out rally in the bottom of the second after a single and a walk, but McConnell grounded sharply to Elon's C.J. Young at second for the final out of the frame.
Â
Following Ogren's leadoff single in the fourth that broke up Mulry's perfect game, the NU pitcher placed a bad glove on Zammarelli's infield dribbler, resulting in an error. Although
Charlie McConnell bodied a ball to the ground at third for an unorthodox fielder's choice, McVicar singled though the right side, scoring Zammarelli from second.
Â
Zammarelli plagued Mulry again in the sixth, doubling off the wall in left center and putting two Elon runners in scoring position. After forcing Kyle Jackson to pop up, Mulry threw a 3-1 pitch off the plate to McVicar to load the bases. With the force at any base, Danny Lynch then hit a slow roller to Farrell at first, freezing the Phoenix's lead at 1-0.
Â
McConnell did his best to keep a bad-hop grounder in front of him at third, but his errant throw allowed Elon to place runners at the corners. After Misiaszek had lucked out when the umpires overturned a foul ball ruling in favor of interference and the second out, Ogren connected on a well-placed infield single that scored Kory Shumate to make Elon's lead, 2-0.
Â
Northeastern will conclude its weekend series against the Phoenix at Friedman Diamond on Sunday, April 10, at 12 p.m.
