Baseball salutes seniors as regular season closes

BROOKLINE, Mass. – With a trip to the CAA Baseball Championship already in stow, the Northeastern baseball team reverently let every available member of its 2016 senior class take the field at Friedman Diamond for a final time during Saturday afternoon's Senior Day, won by Towson, 7-4.

Prior to the game, head coach Mike Glavine and his fellow assistant coaches greeted NU seniors Isaac Lippert, Nick Cubarney, Mike Piscopo, Keith Kelly, James Mulry, and Josh Treff along the first-base line with framed displays of their former jerseys. During the past four seasons, the members of the 2016 senior class helped Northeastern claim 111 victories, the most any graduating class has achieved since the program joined the CAA at the start of the 2006 season.

Receiving the honorary start at second base, his 46th start of the season, Kelly was immediately substituted for rest by David Hopkins and walked off to the first of several senior ovations by the Friedman Diamond faithful. Treff's moment came with two outs in the top of the ninth, when Glavine asked Michael Geaslen to replace the second-year captain behind the dish. Lippert and Piscopo pitched back-to-back innings during the seventh and eighth, while Cubarney entered the game as a pinch runner for Shane Allen in the bottom of the ninth.

Mulry, who struck out five during Northeastern's 3-2 victory against Towson the day before, was the only NU senior that was not able to make his way onto the field on Saturday.

Cam Hanley went two-for-four and pummeled a double in the second straight game following his return to the Huskies' lineup. Allen also pegged two hits out of the ninth spot in the order for Northeastern (29-25, 12-11 CAA).

Brian Christian and Nate Borges split the opening five innings on the mound for the Huskies, combining to allow seven hits, five runs, and four strikeouts.

Towson (20-35, 10-14 CAA) scored the first runs for either team in the top of the second as Cuinn Mullins belted an RBI double with two runners on to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0. Following a walk by Christian to John Drexel that loaded the bases, Jake Farrell fired a ground ball to Treff at home for the run-saving force out. Before Christian could get out of the inning, Richie Palacios earned a bases-loaded walk, awarding Towson a 2-0 edge.

With singles by Farrell, Hanley, and Allen in the bottom of the second, NU cut the Tigers' lead in half to 2-1, but a three-run third inning by Towson allowed the visitors to command a 5-1 advantage.

Already enjoying a great defensive Senior Day, Treff connected on a double to left center, scooting Cam Walsh up two bases from first to third. Towson had an opportunity to register the third out of the inning on Max Burt's slow grounder, but a bouncing throw from the Tigers' third baseman went behind the bag at first, allowing Northeastern to capitalize and score twice. Hanley proceeded to double to right center and suddenly with three unearned runs, the Huskies were back within one at 5-4.

Towson would stay the course and tack on a pair of runs in the seventh and ninth to complete the 7-4 score line.

As the No. 5 seed in the upcoming CAA tournament, Northeastern will begin its run to the league crown with a first-round game against No. 4 James Madison on Wednesday, May 25. First pitch between the Huskies and the Dukes is set for 12 p.m. at College of Charleston's The Ballpark at Patriots Point (Mount Pleasant, South Carolina).
