Civale, Treff headline 2016 CAA baseball awards

CAA release

RICHMOND, Va. – For the first time in its 11-year CAA history, the Northeastern baseball team has its first Pitcher of the Year and its first Defensive Player of the Year winners as starter Aaron Civale and catcher Josh Treff headlined the league's 2016 postseason awards on Tuesday.

Eight different Huskies came away with 11 of the conference's season honors, the most the program has received during its CAA tenure. Behind Civale's All-CAA First Team selection, Dustin Hunt and Mike Fitzgerald garnered spots on the All-CAA Second Team, while Pat Madigan, Cam Walsh, and Charlie McConnell each made their way onto the All-CAA Third Team. Walsh and McConnell were also named to the CAA All-Rookie Team, while Mike Driscoll was named to the league's All-Academic Team.

Civale became the first NU player to win a conference Pitcher of the Year award since Adam Ottavino was named the America East's top hurler in 2005. The six-foot-two right-hander led the CAA in ERA (1.84), innings pitched (107.1), and strikeouts (111), winning eight games while opponents hit .224 against him. A three-time CAA Pitcher of the Week selection, Civale threw seven or more innings during each of his 14 starts, a feat that helped him break Kevin Ferguson's single-season innings pitched record at Northeastern. Entering the 2016 CAA tournament, Civale is nine strikeouts shy of tying Ottavino's single-season program record as well.

Treff's Defensive Player of the Year selection was justified with his league-leading numbers against stolen base attempts. During the 2016 regular season, Treff threw out 24 runners stealing while entertaining a caught-stealing percentage of 36.9. Known for his ability to call his own game behind the plate, the redshirt senior led the NU pitching staff to a CAA record, 424 strikeouts, and fielded at a rate of .989, committing only five errors.

Receiving his third consecutive All-CAA selection, Hunt boasted a 1.60 ERA during the seven starts he made against CAA competition, posting shutouts against UNCW, Delaware, and Hofstra. The junior right-hander fired a career best, 86 strikeouts, during 79.0 innings pitched, limiting opposing hitters to a league low, .223 batting average. Hunt was also a two-time CAA Pitcher of the Week recipient during the regular season.

Fitzgerald, who joins Hunt on the All-CAA Second Team, delivered a single-season record, 11 saves, for Northeastern on top of earning three victories and maintaining a 3.34 ERA. During 25 relief appearances, Fitzgerald struck out 29 batters and kept opponents hitting just .218 late during games.

The Huskies' outfielder corps of Madigan, McConnell, and Walsh, rightfully made their way onto the All-CAA Third Team. Madigan paced Northeastern in home runs (six) and RBIs (30), doubling eight times in addition to hitting .262 and slugging .415. McConnell moved like lightning on the base paths this season, recording 25 thefts and scoring a team high, 32 runs. Despite notching a team best, 50 hits, McConnell's .289 batting average was trumped only Walsh's .323. Walsh frequented the bags as well for NU with a .423 on-base percentage, pairing six extra-base hits with seven steals and 31 runs scored. McConnell and Walsh were each named CAA Rookie of the Week once during the 2016 season.

Driscoll became the second consecutive Northeastern pitcher to be named to the CAA All-Academic Team, rounding out the 2016 class of NU postseason award winners.

UNCW catcher Nick Feight was named CAA Player of the Year, while the Seahawks' Ryan Foster was named Co-Pitcher of the Year alongside Civale. Towson second baseman Richie Palacios was named CAA Rookie of the Year, while UNCW head coach Mark Scalf was named CAA Coach of the Year.

No. 5 Northeastern will begin its run to the CAA title on Wednesday, May 25, when the Huskies open the tournament with a 12 p.m. first-round game against No. 4 James Madison.
