BROOKLINE, Mass. – A pair of bases-loaded rallies during the eighth and ninth innings by the Northeastern baseball team ended with the Huskies coming up one run short of Boston College, 7-6, during Wednesday afternoon's game at Friedman Diamond.
Â
The Eagles appeared to have had the game sewn up with a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, turning two outs and clearing the bases on a 6-4-3 double play. However, two BC fielding errors sandwiched around a
Nolan Lang single suddenly gave Northeastern life, loading the bases and putting the tying run on second. Although
Cam Walsh managed to bolt home on a wild pitch, bringing NU within a run,
Jake Farrell took a called third strike through the zone, stranding the tying run at third.
Â
Walsh led the Huskies with three runs, one of which came during his first collegiate home run that tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
Max Burt caught Walsh's home-run fever just two batters later, pummeling a ball to deep left field with
Nolan Lang aboard to send Northeastern in front, 3-1.
Â
Boston College (25-17) swiped two of its 11 stolen bases during the top of the third, capitalizing on a handful of walks as well to load up the bases. After Gian Martellini drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, Johnny Adams laced a single to center, scoring Joe Cronin to knot the game at 3-3. Mitch Bigras proceeded to knock a single to right, but was unable to collect an RBI as Walsh threw out Scott Braren at the plate from right field.
Â
Heads-up base running by Walsh and Burt helped the Huskies reclaim a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third. With runners on the corners and two outs, Burt became caught in a rundown as a result of a pickoff throw. However, Burt managed to avoid the tag long enough for Walsh to dart home from third, putting NU ahead for the time being.
Â
Braren's two-RBI single in the top of the fourth plagued
Mike Piscopo's relief outing, but the senior recovered nicely in the fifth, dealing a one-two-three inning. Although Cronin's sixth-inning double rounded out a two-run frame for the visitors, Boston College was kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way with strong relief innings out of
Brian Christian,
Isaac Lippert, and
Will Jahn.
Â
Northeastern began its late-game comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Lang opened the inning with a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position after Burt took a 2-2 pitch to the upper body. Farrell then produced a base hit to left that loaded the bags full of Huskies with no outs.
Â
Although NU head coach
Mike Glavine would make three straight pinch-hit moves to keep the rally alive, the Huskies managed to score only one run on
Keith Kelly's RBI groundout, stranding two. By game's end, NU had left nine runners on base, while BC had left eight.
Â
Northeastern will next travel to Hofstra to begin a three-game road CAA series against Hofstra. Game one of the weekend series is set for Friday, May 6, at 3 p.m.
