HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – With its offense exploding for 19 hits during the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Hofstra, the Northeastern baseball team recovered from dropping the opening game of the day, 5-1, to salvage a split of the twin billing with an 18-3 victory.
Â
GAME ONE: HOFSTRA TAKES GAME ONE FROM NORTHEASTERN
Â
Junior starter
Aaron Civale began the day on the mound for the Huskies, posting four scoreless frames before surrendering an unearned run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth. Civale retired each of the first nine batters he faced on his way to a seven-strikeout performance with no walks, but surrendered two home runs to Hofstra's Matt Annunziata, including a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
Pat Madigan and
Nolan Lang each belted two-out doubles during the first and sixth innings, respectively.
Zach Perry followed Lang's two-bagger in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle, charting Northeastern's only run of the game.
Â
Despite recording nine base hits as a team,
Josh Treff was the only NU player that managed to register multiple base knocks, going two-for-four from the plate.
Â
GAME TWO: HUSKIES PILE ON RUNS LATE TO WIN GAME TWO
Â
Trailing the Pride, 1-0, following the fourth inning, Northeastern's offense clicked into high gear during the final five frames of Saturday's second game. After loading the bases in the fifth,
Mason Koppens delivered a sacrifice bunt that was bobbled by Hofstra's first baseman, allowing
Charlie McConnell to come across and tie the game at 1-1.
Â
With the bags juiced again in the top of the sixth, Koppens gave the Huskies their first lead, sizzling a bases-clearing triple down the right-field line. Koppens picked up another RBI during Northeastern's eighth-inning rally and finished the game with a career high in the category with five.
Â
Madigan's two-run homer in the top of the eighth capped off a four-run frame for the Huskies, sending them in front, 8-3.
Keith Kelly went four-for-five out of the leadoff spot for NU, powering a three-run home run during the Huskies' 10-run ninth inning.
Â
Cam Walsh scored four runs in addition to going three-for-four and walking twice.
Charlie McConnell recorded two hits in the nine spot, while
Jake Farrell relieved McConnell in the ninth, notching three RBIs and two hits during the ninth inning alone.
Â
James Mulry threw six full innings, striking out six and allowing seven hits.
Andrew Misiaszek and
Will Jahn ended what Mulry started, allowing just one Hofstra hit during the final three innings.
