HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Two doubles by
Charlie McConnell, 10 strikeouts out of
Dustin Hunt, and two double plays highlighted what was an all-around performance on the diamond by the Northeastern baseball team Sunday as the Huskies collected a 4-1 victory during the series finale at University Field.
Â
McConnell was one of three NU players that were able to record three hits off the Pride's arms, all of which happened to be freshmen. Fellow first-years
Cam Walsh and
Jake Farrell each went three-for-five from the plate, while the Huskies' entire rookie corps combined for three runs and two RBIs. McConnell also added two stolen bases on Sunday, upping his season total in thefts to 22.
Â
Hunt commanded the strike zone throughout the afternoon, reaching his career high for the second time this season. The six-foot-five junior fanned five Hofstra batters during his very first trip through the lineup, added three more strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth, and tacked on two more during the sixth and seventh.
Â
NU shortstop
Max Burt came up big for Northeastern (25-21, 9-8 CAA) on both sides of the diamond. Burt made an amazing barehanded play on a ground ball in the bottom of the third, firing to Farrell at first in one fluid motion to throw out the Pride's Kevin O'Connor. The sophomore infielder also belted two hits out of the eight spot in the Huskies' lineup.
Â
Josh Treff caught Hofstra (14-32, 5-15 CAA) twice on the base paths, holding the Pride without a stolen base for the second straight game. Treff's sacrifice bunt in the sixth moved Farrell into scoring position, leaving the door open for McConnell to drive an RBI single to right field.
Â
Walsh notched the first of 13 hits for Northeastern during the top of the first, taking third base easily on
Nick Fanneron's hit-and-run single to center. Farrell then came through with his lone RBI of the day, lifting a ball into left field that scored Walsh.
Â
Strong base running by Treff in the fourth put Northeastern in position to add to its 1-0 lead. Treff lucked out when the throw from his ground ball skipped away at first base, allowing him to speed into second. After taking third base on McConnell's grounder down the first-base line, Treff came home on a shallow RBI single by Burt, cushioning the Huskies' lead at 2-0.
Â
Leading Hofstra by three in the eighth, NU assembled a rally following McConnell's one-out double to right. Having moved up to third base on a passed ball, McConnell had no chance to score on the next play during Burt's infield single to short.
Mason Koppens helped the Huskies chart their fourth run of the game, sending a sacrifice bunt towards the right side, scoring McConnell.
Â
Mike Fitzgerald pitched a flawless ninth inning, tying Bob Nicklas' Northeastern single-season record with his ninth save of the 2016 season.
Â
The Huskies will return to the playing field on Tuesday, May 10, when NU visits UMass Lowell at LeLacheur Field.
