Official Release
BOSTON -- On the heels of the Northeastern women's rowing team's third straight CAA championship and NCAA appearance, senior
Katie O'Connell was named a 2016 Pocock Second Team All- American, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced on June 9. She is the first Northeastern All-American since Greta Haselman in 2012.
"Katie is certainly deserving of this honor," said head coach
Joe Wilhelm. "She is one of the nicest people and best teammates you are ever going to meet, but when you put an oar in her hand, she is an incredibly intense competitor. She makes everyone around her better, including her coaches. Katie is going to be missed by every member of our team."
General requirements for nominating a student-athlete for CRCA post-season honors are:
-The student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution
-The student-athlete must have rowed at least 75% of the current spring season's races in the varsity boat (before and including May 19, 2016)
– The student-athlete must be nominated by her institution
– The head coach of the student-athlete's institution must be a member in good standing of the CRCA
In addition, the nominated student-athletes are then selected to first and second teams based on the strength of finish of the institution's varsity eight within the country, coach comments and the 2k erg score.
O'Connell rowed in the seven seat of the varsity eight during the 2016 campaign, helping lead the Huskies to their third consecutive CAA title and automatic berth into the NCAA championships. While in Sacramento at NCAAs, the 1V finished 17th in the nation, one spot above its seed for its best finish since 2000. As a team, the Huskies finished with 35 points, good for 18th overall.
Individually, four Huskies were named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-Region Team, with O'Connell,
Alaina Williams and
Margaret Walsh all picking up First Team accolades for Region 2, while
Madison Mailey earned Second Team status. Seven student-athletes (
Kristen Brozowski,
Heather Foti,
Jocelyn Mongillo, O'Connell,
Sarah Tokos, Walsh and Williams) also earned CRCA Scholar-Athlete Awards. Student athletes must be in their sophomore year or above, have rowed in the one of the NCAA events for at least 75% of the regular season races, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher to be eligible for the award.
