Coen announces men’s basketball staff changes

Bobby Martin and Joel Smith join the Huskies; Chris Markwood promoted to associate head coach

BOSTON – The Northeastern men's basketball team is pleased to announce the additions of Bobby Martin and Joel Smith to the coaching staff. In addition, assistant coach Chris Markwood has been promoted to associate head coach heading into the 2016-17 season.

"I am very pleased and excited to announce the new additions to our staff," said head coach Bill Coen. "Today, we welcome Coach Bobby Martin and welcome home Joel Smith to the Northeastern Men's Basketball program."

Martin will serve as an assistant coach on Bill Coen's staff while former Husky Joel Smith ('13) will take on the role of video coordinator of the Huskies.

"Coach Martin has been a prominent member of the Boston basketball community for sometime, and has established himself as one the the premier teachers of the game, particularly for front court players. Bobby promises to be an outstanding resource for our players as a coach, teacher and mentor."

Martin, who will focus on coaching the Husky forwards, comes to Northeastern after running BMB Training and Development LLC, a premier training program for basketball players at every level, since 2012.

Prior to starting his own basketball training company, Martin had a successful 16-year professional career that began with the Quad City Thunder of the CBA where he won the CBA Championship in 1994 and was named to the CBA All-Defensive team. Martin then embarked on an 11-year career in the Liga ACB in Spain where he was named as one of the top rebounders in ACB history by Solobasket.com.

In 1993, Martin was a member Team USA's gold medal winning team at the FIBA Americas Championship where he averaged 12.7 points per game to go along with 8.1 rebounds per game, five blocks and a 54.8 shooting percentage.

A three-year starter at Pittsburgh, Martin finished his time ranked 17th on the Pitt scoring list with 1,282 career points, 775 rebounds and 109 blocked shots. He was one of just eight Pitt players to score at least 20 points and grab at least 20 rebounds in a single game and tied the Pitt record for blocks in a game (7).

Out of high school, Martin was a 1987 McDonalds All-American, Street & Smith All-American and was a member of the Nation's best recruiting class which included the likes of (Arizona basketball head coach) Sean Miller, Brian Shorter, Darelle Porter, and Jason Matthews.

Joel Smith returns to his alma mater after a three-year professional basketball career to serve as Northeastern's video coordinator.

"I am so happy and proud to have Joel Smith back home with us," said Coen.  "Joel recently earned his Master's Degree from Northeastern, and will serve as our Video Coordinator, but his title won't do justice to his contributions. As a former captain, 1st team All-CAA player, CAA Champion and one of the best all-time teammates, Joel will serve as a tremendous role model for our players."

After a professional career that took him to Argentina and Mexico, Smith was drafted as the 15th pick in the fourth round of the D-League draft this past October by the Canton Charge.

Smith finished his time at Northeastern as the 13th highest scorer in Husky history with 1,328 career points knocking down 243 career 3-pointers, then-second-most in school history including 83 during the 2012-13 season setting a school record. Smith's career 3FG shooting percentage of 39.9 ranks third all-time.

The sharp shooter and Leander, Texas native was named to the CAA First Team All-Conference in his senior season and helped the Huskies to two NIT appearances during his time on Huntington Ave.

Most recently, Smith returned to Northeastern in May to receive his master's degree in Sports and Leadership through the College of Professional Studies.

"This promotion for Chris is well deserved," said Coen. "He has done an outstanding job recruiting for us the past two seasons at Northeastern and in addition is a terrific coach on the floor working primarily with our guards. Chris is extremely well respected throughout the coaching community as well as within our department. He serves as an outstanding role model and teacher for our student-athletes day in and day out."

After two seasons as an assistant coach under Coen, Markwood has been promoted to associate head coach of the Huskies heading into the 2016-17 season. In addition to working with the guards, Markwood's new responsibilities include greater supervision of the assistant coaches, staff, and managers.

Markwood made an immediate impact at Northeastern, helping the Huskies to a share of the CAA regular season title and a first ever CAA tournament championship title in 2014-15. The Huskies made their return to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 24 years in Markwood's first season on Huntington Ave.

Markwood oversaw the development of David Walker into an All-CAA First Team member and helped Quincy Ford to CAA Second Team All-Conference honors. The duo also captured NABC All-District honors in Markwood's second season at Northeastern, and went on to both play in the NBA Summer League, Ford with the Utah Jazz and Walker with the Miami Heat.

Also of note, incoming freshman Ty Groce is no longer with the Northeastern basketball program.
