BOSTON – Behind 54 second half points, the Northeastern men's basketball team rolled over Drexel Thursday night at Matthews Arena, 92-75 to extend its win streak to eight games, the largest since the 2012-13 season.
Northeastern, who improved to 12-5 overall and 5-0 in conference play with the win, was led by a bevy of Huskies, five of which registered double-digit scoring on the night.
T.J. Williams led the way with his second 30-point effort of the season, tying his career high with 30 points, while adding eight rebounds and seven assists. It was also his 11
th 20-point or better effort of the season, while he kept his streak of scoring at least 16 points in each game this season alive. He is the only player in the country to have achieved that feat.
Maxime Boursiquot notched his first career double-double with a 17 point, 11 rebound game against the Dragons. This marks the second time this season he has pulled down double-digit rebounds against Drexel, finishing with 13 last time out.
Devon Begley added 16 points and a career-high nine assists on the night while
Alex Murphy had 15 points and six boards and
Shawn Occeus finished with 14 points and was perfect from deep going 4-of-4 on the night.
Drexel was led by Chelsea, Mass. native Sammy Mojica who dropped 18 in his homecoming while Rodney Williams and Miles Overton finished with 14 apiece.
Drexel had an early advantage over the Huskies, eventually getting out to a 25-19 lead midway through the first half after a pair of free throws from Rodney Williams.
The Huskies quickly erased that lead and took a 10-point lead of their own behind a 16-0 run spanning a five minute and 16 second period where the Huskies went 7-for-8 from the field, while Drexel was held scoreless.
Williams started the action off with a layup, Occeus hit a trey, Williams followed with a jumper, Murphy downed a three, Boursiquot had back-to-back layups and Begley capped the run with a layup to gain a 35-25 advantage.
Drexel responded with a 7-0 run at the end of the half, but Occeus hit a three with time winding down to send the Huskies into the locker room with a 38-32 lead at halftime.
Occeus continued his hot play into the second half, opening the scoring in the second stanza with a pair of threes to push Northeastern to a 10-point lead.
After the Huskies got out to the double-digit advantage, Drexel crept back in making it a four-point game with just under 11 minutes to play. Northeastern responded, and built that lead back up to 13 using a 9-0 run, highlighted by seven points by Williams including a fastbreak three that forced the Dragons to call a timeout to settle things.
Following that stretch, the Huskies settled in and comfortably cruised to the 17-point victory, capped off with a 3-pointer from Begley to seal things with five seconds left in the ball game.
The Huskies will look to keep their eight-game win streak alive when they head out on the road for a three-game stretch beginning on Saturday afternoon at Towson. The game will be aired live on Comcast SportsNet starting at 2 p.m.
