BOSTON – A 13-0 second half run was not enough as the Northeastern men's basketball team fell just short at Towson Saturday afternoon falling 74-67 at SECU Arena.
Â
The loss was the first of the CAA season for the Huskies (12-6, 5-1 CAA) and snapped an eight-game win streak that dated back to Dec. 10, 2016.
Â
Towson (10-9, 2-3) jumped out to a fast lead in the first half, building up an 18-point advantage 11 minutes into action, a lead that Northeastern came close to tying, but were unable to overcome.
Â
T.J. Williams finished with a team-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, leading all scorers with 14 first half points. Williams extends his streak of 16 or more points in each and every game this year, while also moving into 26
th place on the Northeastern all-time scoring charts past Harry Barnes (1,114; 1965-68). He currently has 1,120 career points.
Â
Devon Begley added 15 points, including a few big 3-pointers that kept the Tigers in check while
Alex Murphy added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Anthony Green also finished with eight rebounds and six points today.
Â
William Adala Moto led all scorers with 24 points, 12-of-13 from the free throw line, while also tallying seven rebounds. John Davis added 16 for the Tigers who have now won two-straight.
Â
After a Williams jumper, Towson went on a 10-0 run over the course of four minutes to gain an 18-point advantage midway through the first half, a run that was ended by a Williams jumper, making it a 25-9 game as
Bill Coen called his first timeout to settle things down.
Â
Following the timeout, Northeastern went on a 9-4 run to close the gap to 11 points, highlighted by a Green slam that forced Pat Skerry to call a Towson timeout. The two teams went back-and-forth in the final four minutes of play and a Williams trey with time winding down in the half made it a 10-point ball game at halftime.
Â
Despite the deficit, the Huskies shot 60 percent from the field in the first half, though Towson was not far behind with a 58.3 shooting percentage.
Â
Towson quickly added to its lead in the second half, but
Shawn Occeus, fouled while shooting a three, knocked down all-three free throws to make it an 11-point Towson advantage.
Â
After the Tigers regained a 15-point lead, Northeastern went on a 13-0 run over a four-minute span as
Bolden Brace and Begley teamed up for back-to-back-to-back threes and a
T.J. Williams fastbreak dunk made it a two-point difference with 11:13 left in the ballgame.
Â
But the Tigers were able to stave off Northeastern for the remainder of the game to hang on for the 74-67 win.
Â
The Huskies will continue their road trip next week with a pair of games starting at Delaware on Thursday at 7 p.m. and will conclude the trip at Hofstra Saturday at 4 p.m.Â
