BOSTON – Arriving at the halfway point in its 2016-17 CAA schedule, the Northeastern women's basketball team will travel from one Northeast metropolis to another on Sunday, Jan. 29, as NU visits Philadelphia to face Drexel in a 2 p.m. league battle. With a victory, the Huskies would salvage a split of their regular-season series against the Dragons for the second consecutive year.
Â
ALL-TIME AGAINST DREXEL
Â
Northeastern and Drexel have only played each other as members of the same conference, crossing paths in the America East (and its predecessor, North Atlantic Conference) between 1992 and 2001, as well as annually in the CAA since 2006. Although NU owned a 16-7 advantage against the Dragons in the America East, Drexel has since turned the all-time series in its favor and with a win on Jan. 8, 2017, improved its lead to 26-20.
Â
LAST MEETING
Â
On the verge of extending its mid-season winning streak to five in a row, Northeastern experienced a 63-33 setback against Drexel when the two teams met for the first time at Cabot Center on Jan. 8.
Francesca Sally recorded her seventh career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds), accounting for one third of the Huskies' offensive production. Eleven of the Dragons' 23 field goals came from downtown, including six 3-point makes by Jessica Pellechio. Northeastern trailed Drexel, 16-14, at the end of the first quarter before experiencing an eight-minute scoring drought during the second quarter that helped the Dragons build a 32-16 halftime lead.
Claudia Ortiz finished with six points and 10 rebounds,
Gabby Giacone registered six points and four boards, and
Jess Genco remained scoreless for only the second time during her then-46 career games at Northeastern.
Â
LAST TIME AT DREXEL
Â
Trailing Drexel by three, 65-62, with 10 seconds remaining in regulation on Jan. 8, 2016, then-freshman
Jess Genco kept the ball in her hands and drove through the lane to score a floater, earning the potential game-tying, and-one call with 3.2 seconds left on the clock. Genco hit the ensuing free throw to tie the game at 65-65 and send it into overtime, where Northeastern shut out the Dragons, 8-0, to claim its first CAA victory of the season. The Huskies came close to setting a new single-game program rebounding record (58), collecting 56 during the night, including 24 on the offensive end. Genco finished with eight points, seven rebounds, and six assists, playing the entire 45-minute game without substitution.
Â
HUSKIES ON THE ROAD
Â
Northeastern will take the floor on Sunday in search of earning its first road victory since Jan. 2, when the Huskies prevailed, 53-51, in overtime during their CAA opener at Hofstra. Since then, NU came up winless during its three-game road stretch between Jan. 13 and Jan. 20. Overall, Northeastern is 3-6 this season in true road games and 1-3 during conference road games.
Â
DREXEL AT HOME
Â
The Dragons own the best home record among CAA teams at 8-1, having started the season with six straight victories at the Daskalakis Athletic Center before being tripped up by Elon, 75-65, on Jan. 6. Among Drexel's key home court wins, the Dragons defeated Penn State, 83-60, on opening night (Nov. 11) and 10 days later, upset No. 11/14 Syracuse, 62-61.
Â
COMMON OPPONENTS
Â
Northeastern and Drexel share three common victories against Hofstra, Towson, and UNCW. Neither the Huskies nor the Dragons have defeated Elon or James Madison (Drexel has lost twice to Elon). Overall, NU is 3-2, while the Dragons are 3-3.
Â
