BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Northeastern men's hockey team (7-9-4, 1-7-2) scored twice in a span of 50 seconds in the third period to turn a three-goal deficit into a one-goal game, but couldn't net the equalizer late in regulation as No. 13 Vermont (14-6-2, 6-3-1) escaped with a 4-3 victory on Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The teams traded goals during the opening 20 minutes on tallies from Brian Bowen and
Garret Cockerill before the Catamounts received goals from Brendan Bradley and Corey Moriarty to take a 3-1 edge through two periods. UVM extended it to three early in the third period on a goal from Trey Phillips before Northeastern began to claw back into the contest with goals from
Patrick Schule and
Zach Aston-Reese in less than a minute to make it 4-3 with 11:37 remaining.
Aston-Reese's third period goal extended his point streak to nine games (13 goals, seven assists), the longest of his career. He now has 19 goals and 15 assists in 20 games this season, good for fifth in the nation in scoring, first in goals and first in power play goals (nine).
Dylan Sikura also extended his point streak to a career-long nine games (eight goals, 10 assists) with a first period assist, while
Adam Gaudette had a team-high two helpers on the evening.
Ryan Ruck got the nod in goal for the Huskies on Saturday, making 20 saves, while Stefanos Lekkas had 20 stops at the other end. UVM held a slight 24-23 edge in shots on goal on the evening, while the NU power play was held to a 1-of-6 showing and the UVM power play at 0-of-3.
Goal descriptions:
• Vermont struck first less than eight minutes into the game when Brian Bowen potted his fifth of the year. Just as a Northeastern penalty had expired, Trey Phillips hit Brendan Bradley with a pass along the half wall to the left of Ruck. Bradley then tossed the puck into a dangerous area, where Bowen got a stick on it from the doorstep to send it over Ruck for the score.
• The Huskies fired right back with 6:13 remaining in the frame as Cockerill buried his fifth goal of the season, and second in the last three games.
John Stevens began the play for NU by winning a puck battle near the Vermont bench and the attacking blue line. Stevens gathered the puck and sent it across to
Dylan Sikura entering the zone with speed. Sikura then left a drop pass for Cockerill joining the rush, and Cockerill ripped a shot from the slot that beat Lekkas over the glove.
• The Catamounts retook the lead just 1:35 into the second period when Vermont capitalized at the tail end of a power play. As NU had killed off its third penalty of the evening, Bowen fired a shot on goal from between the hash marks that Ruck knocked down, but the rebound sat out in front of the NU netminder and Bradley got a stick on it to poke him his fourth of the season.
• UVM extended its lead to two with 6:29 to go in the second frame as Corey Moriarty flung home his first collegiate tally. With Vermont circling in the attacking zone, the puck squirted out atop the crease where Ruck tried to poke it out of danger. The puck, though, landed right on the stick on Moriarty in the slot and he fired it past Ruck five-hole for the score.
• Vermont made it a three-goal game with 12:51 left in regulation when Trey Phillips potted his second of the season as the Catamounts transitioned up ice. After UVM forced a turnover in its defensive zone, the Catamounts turned and quickly headed up ice as Derek Lodermeier tossed the puck to Phillips in the neutral zone. He then crossed the blue line and cut into the slot before flinging a shot that beat Ruck shortside.
• Schule cut the gap to two less than 30 seconds after the Phillips tally with his fourth of the year and second in as many games. As the line of Schule, Gaudette and
Lincoln Griffin cycled the attack around the Vermont cage, Griffin fired a shot on goal that Lekkas got a piece of. Chaos ensued in front of the crease with players vying for the loose puck, but it was Schule who found and it sent it home to make it 4-2.
• When Vermont was called for a crosscheck immediately following the Schule goal, Aston-Reese made it a one-goal game. Again, it was Gaudette beginning the play for the Huskies with puck possession behind the cage. Gaudette remained patient, allowing Aston-Reese to get free between the hashmarks, and received a pass for a one-timer that Lekkas couldn't get a hold of.
Stats of the game:
• Northeastern is now 23-32-7 all-time against Vermont.
• Aston-Reese moved into sole possession of 27th place on Northeastern's all-time scoring list with 119 points (54 goals, 65 assists), and is now tied for 29th in career goals. He also extended his point streak to nine games (13 goals, seven assists), the longest of his career.
• Sikura extended his point streak to nine games, the longest streak of his career. He has eight goals and 10 assists in that span.
• Stevens has seven points (one goal, six assists) in his last four games. He's 10 points away from becoming the 49th player in program history to record 100 career points.
The road ahead:
