Highlights
BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Khori Bennett's 43rd-minute equalizer provided the Northeastern men's soccer team with an offensive spark heading into the second half of Saturday's Senior Day match at Parsons Field, but a late goal by James Madison ended up tipping the score against the Huskies as NU was defeated, 2-1.
Â
Prior to kickoff, Northeastern head coach
Chris Gbandi and the men's soccer staff lauded the student-athlete careers of the program's five seniors:
Lewis Aird,
Gaku Lange,
Ackim Mpofu,
Charlton Muhlauri, and
Jonathan Thuresson. Including four of their outings on Saturday, the Huskies' 2017 senior class has now combined to make more than 250 career NU appearances.
Â
Northeastern (2-11-3, 1-5-1 CAA) faced a steady attack from James Madison (8-5-3, 4-1-2 CAA) from wire to wire, experiencing 10-5 and 10-6 shot deficits during the first and second halves.
Alec Supinski set a season high with five attempts, directing four on target, while Bennett chipped in three attempts as well to the Huskies' cause.
Â
Ben Dao put JMU ahead, 1-0, on his sixth goal of the season, just shy of the half hour mark. Tim Estermann was credited with his fourth assist on Dao's 20-yard strike.
Â
Dante Morrissette initiated the sequence that led to the Huskies' equalizing goal late in the first half. Morrissette earned his first collegiate point (assist) by setting the table for Bennett's third career goal and first since Oct. 29, 2016, against College of Charleston.
Â
NU handled each of the Dukes' 13 corners on Saturday, but a costly turnover in the backfield allowed JMU to retake the lead during the 83rd minute. Manuel Ferriol had stolen the ball away from the Huskies before making an unassisted attempt on goal that found the inside right netting.
Â
With Saturday's defeat, the Huskies have been eliminated from CAA postseason contention.

GOAL RECAPS
Â
•
James Madison (29th minute): Jonathan Thuresson punted away the Huskies' goal kick, which was possessed by the Dukes near the midfield line. After JMU had crossed the ball back onto its side of the pitch, Tim Estermann gained control of it near the left corner of the Dukes' 18-yard box before passing to Ben Dao, who had been trailing the ball to Estermann's right. Dao then struck a right-footed, left-to-right shot from the top of the box through the right post.
Â
•
Northeastern (43rd minute): Dante Morrissette intercepted the James Madison clearance, five yards inside the Huskies' attacking side of the pitch. Morrissette proceeded to make a run up the left flank, crossing from roughly 25 yards out to the top of Northeastern's six-yard box, where
Khori Bennett volleyed the ball from point-blank range to equalize.
Â
•
James Madison (83rd minute): Evensky Berleus misfired a backfield pass to
Charlton Muhlauri, allowing Manuel Ferriol to win possession. Ferriol continued his run to the top of the Dukes' 18-yard box, where he unleashed a rolling, left-to-right shot past Thuresson and through the right post.
