BROOKLINE, Mass. – Two penalty kick goals off the boot of
Khori Bennett plus a stylish goal by
Dan Munch amounted to enough firepower for the Northeastern men's soccer team to overcome a one-goal deficit and upend Vermont, 3-2, in overtime during the Huskies' 2017 home finale on Tuesday night at Parsons Field.
Â
After NU had conceded first to the Catamounts during the 11th minute (Jon Arnar Barddal), Bennett put the Huskies in prime position to equalize during the 32nd minute, drawing the foul in the box that created the first of three combined penalty tries between the two sides. The junior forward approached the dot and proceeded to bury the kick through the open right side of the net as Vermont's first half keeper, Clay Thomas, had incorrectly guessed to the left.
Â
Northeastern (3-11-3) remained level with Vermont (9-7-0) at one goal apiece until midway in the second half, when
Dan Munch redirected Bennett's blocked attempt from close range to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Munch, who recorded three of the Huskies' 12 attempts and two of the squad's six shots on target on Tuesday, celebrated his second goal of the season and second during his last three appearances.
Â
Despite the Huskies surrendering 13 shots to the Catamounts during the second half, only two of which landed on target, Northeastern maintained its 2-1 edge until the waning moments of regulation, when
Gaku Lange was ruled as the culprit on Geo Alves' dive through the left side of the box. Like Bennett's earlier penalty, Mikel Kabala guessed to the right and hugged the post while
Noah Abrams rolled to the left.
Â
NU barely survived Vermont's attacking sequence five minutes into the first overtime. Munch's header clearance of Alves' first corner nearly resulted in an own goal, while
Alec Supinski was credited with the team save that kept Ivar Orn Arnason off the score sheet.
Â
Northeastern assembled one final attack with less than 35 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. On the receiving end of
Gerardo Milano's lead cross, Munch was tripped at the edge of the box by the Catamounts' second half and extra time goalkeeper, Alex Popovich, triggering the head referee to motion for the third penalty kick of the match. Bennett reversed his first-half attempt and bulleted his strike through the left side to lift the Huskies' their third extra-time victory of the season.

GOAL RECAPS
Â
•
Vermont (11th minute): Methodical passing by the Catamounts allowed the visitors to work the ball from the goalkeeper's hands, up the right side, and towards the top of the 18-yard box. Danny Orrego and Geo Alves made consecutive right-to-left passes to set up Jon Arnar Barddal at the top of the box, where Barddal threaded his first touch through the right post, past the outstretched hands of
Noah Abrams.
Â
•
Northeastern (32nd minute): Gerardo Milano helped NU regain possession on its attacking side with a brilliant sliding tackle, instantly regaining his feet before crossing to
Khori Bennett, who was countering up the left flank. Bennett was taken down in the box and proceeded to send the ensuing penalty kick through the open right side of Clay Thomas' net.
Â
•
Northeastern (68th minute): Milano initiated the Huskies' counter, finding Bennett open on the left side. Bennett then hugged the left sideline before curling his run parallel to the top of the 18-yard box, passing to
Alec Supinski, who was attacking to Bennett's right. Supinksi returned the ball to Bennett, who reversed his direction and had his left-footed shot blocked by the Vermont defenders. Munch possessed the deflection and finished the play, one-on-one against Alex Popovich.
Â
•
Vermont (88th minute): Geo Alves took on
Gaku Lange, one-on-one near the left corner of Vermont's 18-yard box. Alves played the ball to his left, towards the end line, but was taken down with minimal contact from Lange. Mikel Kabala attempted the match-tying penalty kick and was successful, guessing right while
Noah Abrams dove left.
Â
•
Northeastern (100th minute): Grant Elgin intercepted Vermont's forward cross, playing immediately to Milano, who countered to Bennett along the left sideline. After Bennett's nutmeg allowed him to negotiate two defenders, he fed the ball to Milano, who eyed Munch at the top of the Huskies' attack. Munch beat Popovich to the cross and was taken down by the goalkeeper inside the box, setting the table for Bennett to guess correctly on the match-winning penalty kick.
