'Swartz from Aird' goal not enough for Huskies

Box Score | Season Statistics | Infographic | Highlights

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Drawing level with Hartford on Harry Swartz's third goal of the season, the Northeastern men's soccer team appeared to be on its way to overcoming a 1-0 deficit against the Hawks but ended Tuesday night short of earning the result as the Huskies' succumbed to the 2-1 defeat at Parsons Field.

Less than 10 minutes of match time separated the two teams' three combined goals during Tuesday's back-and-forth second half that featured 15 combined shots and six corners, the latter of which all belonged to Northeastern (2-7-2). Swartz's 25-yard strike during the 56th minute leveled the match at 1-1 – a score that only held for four minutes before Kelechi Akujobi tapped in the eventual match-winner.

Similar to Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Drexel, the Huskies played better attacking soccer than their opponent, despite being unable to secure a point. NU outgained the Hawks, 7-0, in corners on Tuesday and attained a double-digit shot advantage (18-8), but managed to chart only three attempts during the final half hour of play upon falling behind, 2-1.

Northeastern's starting XI combined to produce 16 of the Huskies' 18 shots. Swartz led the team with five attempts, scoring on a pass from Lewis Aird for the third time this season.

Jonathan Thuresson made two saves, both during the second half.

GOAL RECAPS

• Hartford (50th minute): After back-to-back header clearances by Edward Okey and Dante Morrissette moved the ball out of the Huskies' defensive box, Hartford's Fredrik Ekman intercepted Morrissette's ball and bounced a header pass forward to Alexis Triadis, who immediately turned and volleyed. Triadis' attempt took a lofty deflection off Okey at the top of the Hawks' 18-yard box and into the net, catching Jonathan Thuresson flat-footed.

• Northeastern (56th minute): With NU gaining ground on Hartford up the right sideline, Lewis Aird made a sudden flip of the pitch from right to left, crossing to Harry Swartz. Upon beating his defender, Swartz laced a bullet to the top left corner of the net, past the diving, outstretched hands of the Hawks' keeper, Jimmy Slayton.

• Hartford (59th minute): Alexis Triadis sent the Hartford set piece into the Hawks' attacking box from roughly 30 yards away on the right side. Jonathan Thuresson made the initial save, blocking Jacob Slomski's redirection of Triadis' cross, but Kelechi Akujobi was there to complete the unassisted put-back.

Northeastern will remain home on Saturday, Oct. 7, when the Huskies resume CAA play against William & Mary during a 5 p.m. kickoff at Parsons Field. NU will be hosting its Kick for Dana Farber Game, during which all proceeds collected will go to support cancer research at Dana Farber.
