Coen & Williams PostgameÂ
BOSTON – In a game that came down to the final seconds,
T.J. Williams sent a last second 3-point try through the net at the buzzer, but UNCW was able to outlast the Northeastern men's basketball team 66-65 at Matthews Arena on Thursday night.
Â
Williams, who notched 27 of his career-high 33 points in the second half, tied the entire second-half effort by UNCW (27 points). Â
Â
For most, the game looked like it might be over at halftime with the Seahawks leading 39-19 after the first 20 minutes of play. But for the Huskies, who have come back from 13, 16 and 17-point deficits at the half to win already this year, it was just another ball game.
Â
An
Anthony Green slam with just over 15 minutes left in the second half jumpstarted a 16-1 run over a 4:49 span to make it a six-point ball game with ten-and-a-half minutes to go in the second stanza. Also during that run, the Huskies held UNCW without a field goal for a 6:14 stretch.
Â
Three Huskies combined for all 16 points during that span led by
T.J. Williams' seven,
Alex Murphy's five and Green's four points. Both Williams and Murphy drew and-ones and completed the three-point play.
Â
Northeastern later went on a 6-0 run over a 2:46 span to make it a one-point game with 52.6 seconds left. Williams started things off with a layup, followed by a Green slam, his fourth of the night. A pair of Williams free throws cut the lead to just one, but after a Husky turnover UNCW was able to get enough of a lead from the charity stripe to hang on for the win.
Â
Williams' 33 points were a career best, as he registered his third 30-point effort of the season and his career, the most since J.J. Barea had six such efforts in the 2004-05 season.
Â
Twelve of Williams' 33 points came from the charity stripe as he went 12-for-14 on the night and in doing so moved into a tie for second place on the Northeastern all-time single season free throws made list with 168 this season. Williams' is currently tied with Dave Caligaris who also made 168 free throws, in 26 games, in the 1977-78 season.
Â
Murphy finished with 13 points and seven rebounds while Green finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and a career-high tying four blocks on the night.
Â
Chris Flemmings led the way for UNCW with 21 points. Flemmings, who outscored the Huskies 20-19 in the first half, was held to just one point, a free throw at the 18:55 mark of the second half.
Â
The Huskies and Seahawks were all square at eight through the first five minutes of play in a stretch that was highlighted by back-to-back blocks by
Shawn Occeus and
Anthony Green as Green tied the game up at eight all with a put back dunk.
Â
Following a
T.J. Williams free throw to give the Huskies a 9-8 edge, UNCW went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. The Huskies would even the score at 14-all thanks to a Max Boursiquot layup, but over the final 9:23 of the half, the Seahawks outscored the Huskies 25-5 to take a 39-19 halftime lead.
Â
The Huskies will wrap up their home season on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they face the College of Charleston on Senior Day at Matthews Arena. Northeastern will honor its three seniors,
Jimmy Marshall,
Alex Murphy and
T.J. Williams in a pregame ceremony.
