Extra-base hits send baseball past Ospreys, 9-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Scott Holzwasser and Jimmy Hand bookended first- and ninth-inning home runs around Cam Hanley's seventh-inning, bases-clearing triple to provide the majority of the scoring for the Northeastern baseball team on Friday as the Huskies celebrated their first win of the 2017 season in 9-1 fashion against North Florida.

Holzwasser lifted Northeastern (1-3) to an early, 2-0 lead just two batters into the game, sending his first career homer to left center and plating Mason Koppens, who had opened the game with a leadoff walk. The NU rookie later picked up a third RBI during the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly that brought home David Hopkins.

Mike Fitzgerald protected the Huskies' lead throughout the duration of his six-inning outing, surrendering just one run to North Florida (2-3) during the bottom of the third on Yahir Gurrola's RBI double. Fitzgerald struck out four, walked one, and allowed five hits en route to earning his first career victory as a starter.

The Huskies distanced themselves from the Ospreys during a four-run seventh inning. David Hopkins opened the frame with an infield single to short and advanced to second upon Austin Drury committing the first of two North Florida errors. Like Koppens had done two batters before, Charlie McConnell too dropped down a bunt to move the pair of NU runners over, but a second error by the Ospreys loaded the bases for the Huskies with just one out.

With the bags full, Hanley unloaded his first extra-base hit of the season down the right-field line, bringing home all three NU base runners and propelling the Huskies to a 5-1 advantage. Pat Madigan later completed Hanley's trip around the bases, pegging an RBI single to left field, giving Northeastern a five-run lead.

Hopkins smacked a one-out double during the top of the eighth inning, took third base on Koppens' single, and scored the Huskies' seventh run of the game on Holzwasser's sacrifice fly.

Pinch hitting for Nick Fanneron in the top of the ninth, Hand muscled a two-run, insurance homer to right field, capping off a 12-hit day at the plate for Northeastern.

Brian Christian and Brian Rodriguez combined to toss scoreless frames during the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.
