BOSTON – A Boston University power play with less than two minutes remaining in regulation set up the game-winning goal from Chad Krys with 24.9 seconds left to send the No. 8/6 Terriers (23-10-3) to a Hockey East Quarterfinals sweep of the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (18-15-5) on Saturday night at Agganis Arena, 3-2.
The Huskies bolted out to a 2-0 first period advantage for the second straight evening as
Biagio Lerario netted his first collegiate goal less than three minutes into the game before
Nolan Stevens redirected a
Matt Filipe pass home on the doorstep midway through the frame to give Northeastern a two-goal edge through 20 minutes.
BU cut the deficit in half on the power play when Jacob Forsbacka-Karlsson tipped home a Clayton Keller pass with 5:22 to go in the second period, and Nick Roberto knotted the game at two three minutes into the third on a wrister from the slot.
The teams would go back and forth from there before the Huskies were whistled for a hooking minor in the defensive zone that led to the eventual game-winner from Krys, who pounded home a rebound off an initial bid from Forsbacka-Karlsson to send the Terriers into the conference semifinals.
Ryan Ruck made 25 saves in goal for Northeastern while Jake Oettinger had 24 for the hosts.
Saturday's loss ends Northeastern's season, a campaign in which the Huskies reached 18 wins for the 11th time in team history. Senior
Zach Aston-Reese finishes his career on Huntington Avenue ranked 12th on Northeastern all-time scoring list (148 points) and all-time goals list (66) after a remarkable 2016-17 season where the Hobey Baker candidate finished tied for sixth on the school's single-season scoring list and tied for seventh in single-season goals.
Goal descriptions:
• The Huskies jumped out to the early lead for the second straight night, this time coming off the stick of an unlikely source on Lerario's first collegiate goal. With the line of Lerario,
Tanner Pond and
Mike Jamieson controlling the puck in the attacking zone, Pond knocked the puck out to Lerario alone in the slot, and he ripped it bar down to make it 1-0 Northeastern.
• NU made it 2-0 with 8:39 to go in the opening period when
Nolan Stevens netted his 10th of the season in the waning seconds of a Northeastern power play. Just as the Terriers were released for a holding minor,
Ryan Shea fired the puck over to Matt Flipe in the right corner. Filipe then settled the puck and sent it in to a dangerous area in front of Oettinger, where Nolan tipped it home inside the left post.
• Boston University made it a 2-1 contest with 5:22 remaining in the second on a power play strike from Forsbacka-Karlsson. As the Terriers transitioned up ice, Charlie McAvoy flung the puck up to Clayton Keller in the neutral zone. After gaining the blueline, Keller saucered a pass up into the slot, where Forsbacka-Karlsson got a stick on it to redirect it over Ruck's shoulder for his 13th of the year.
• The Terriers tied the game two just 3:01 into the third period on Roberto's fifth of the year. After taking a pass from McAvoy, Forsbacka-Karlsson hit Roberto with a pass entering the attacking zone. Roberto then cut into the slot and wired a shot over Ruck's blocker for the score. The goal was reviewed for a possible offsides, but stood as called.
• Boston University netted the game-winner with 24 seconds left in regulation on its second power play tally of the night, this one from Krys. As BU patrolled the attacking zone in the final minute of the game, Forsbacka-Karlsson fired a shot on goal that got blocked by the Northeastern defense, but Krys flew in from the point to quickly hammer home the rebound for his fifth of the season.
