PHILADELPHIA – The Northeastern women's rowing team kicked off the 2017 season on a high note Saturday with a victory in the first varsity at the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
Rowing out of lane 5, the Huskies picked up a four second win with a time of 6:19.05, topping No. 17 Penn (6:22.94) after Northeastern finished first in its heat with a 12-second win over Delaware with
Madison Mailey in the stroke seat and
Haley Doucette at coxswain. Navy (6:30.03), Boston College (6:35.56), Temple (6:36.00) and Massachusetts (6:36.64) also reached the grand final.
The second varsity, coxed by
Samantha Shulman, also found success after topping George Washington in its heat (7:02.62) by nine seconds to take the bronze the grand final with a time of 6:36.09 behind Pennsylvania (6:29.29) and Navy (6:34.29).
The varsity four also reached the grand after a second place finish in its heat (7:35.94) just behind Navy (7:32.60). In the grand final, Pennsylvania would take first overall (7:14.08) ahead of Navy (7:16.06) and Lafayette (7:16.87) while the Huskies took fourth (7:18.49).
The second varsity four, after picking up a second place finish in its heat with a time of 7:46.96 to reach the grand, the Huskies finished fifth overall at 7:44.46. Pennsylvania would take the gold at 7:19.71 ahead of Navy (7:21.30) and Boston College (7:27.20).
In their first collegiate race, the novice eight won its heat over Colgate by 19 seconds before finding similar success in the grand with a seven second win over St. Joseph's with a time of 6:51.60.
The Huskies will be back on the water next weekend when Northeastern travels to Camden, New Jersey for the Orange Challenge Cup.
