Northeastern retains Council Cup with victory over BU

BOSTON – On a raw morning with a cross tailwind and slight chop on the Charles River, the Northeastern women's rowing team picked up its second straight cup victory by knocking off Boston University for the Council Cup on Saturday morning, setting the program's Charles River course record along the way.

In the first varsity, Northeastern and Michigan State separated themselves from Massachusetts and Boston University early in the race and battled all the way down the course. The Huskies led by half a length through 800-meters and maintained a small margin through the first 1500-meters before the Spartans pulled even with 500-meters to go as waters began to get choppy. Both crews then went stroke-for-stroke the rest of the way before MSU ultimately edged Northeastern by less than a second at 6:25.618.

Northeastern's time of 6:25.948, though, smashed the program's Charles River course record by six seconds, previously set against Boston University in 2000. The time also gave the Huskies the Council Cup for the fourth straight season, and ninth time in the last 11 meetings in a cup race that's been run since 1997.

"I thought our athletes acquitted themselves well today," said head coach Joe Wilhelm. "Close races against quality opponents such as Michigan State will help us prepare for the championship races in the coming weeks."

Rowing out of lane three in the second varsity, the Huskies kept close to Michigan State in the first 250-meters and maintained it through 750-meters to pull even. Approaching the second half of the race at 37 strokes per minute, the Huskies made a move to take a one seat lead on the Spartans as both crews vied for the first position. Northeastern attempted to make an early push at the 1200 to gain a bigger advantage on MSU, but couldn't shake the Spartans who remained close behind. Michigan State overtook Northeastern in the final 400-meters of the race, but NU fought right back with a rate of 38 strokes per minute to take the lead for good and finish with a time of 6:42.684 to MSU's 6:43.731.

The varsity four race saw Michigan State overcome a slow start to lead the Huskies by two lengths approaching the Mass. Ave. bridge, with the Minutewomen and Terriers trailing behind by open water. The Huskies continued to push, but the Spartans proved too tough in the race and created an open water advantage to win by seven seconds at 7:28.4.

The Huskies put their depth on display in the third varsity race, setting the tone early to open a significant lead over the field before crossing the finish with a time of 7:13.269, knocking off Michigan State by 15 seconds and Massachusetts by 39 seconds.

Northeastern and Michigan State, like many of the other races during the morning, jockeyed for position throughout the second varsity four to earn an open water advantage over the field. It was MSU, however, who ultimately picked up the victory by less than a second at 7:32.300, and followed suit in the third varsity four with an open water win at 7:40.709 over the Huskies and Radcliffe.

The Huskies will begin postseason competition next weekend when Northeastern heads to Worcester for the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond.
