BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Nate Borges struck out five across six innings and limited Boston College to a solitary, first-inning run on Wednesday afternoon, but a quiet day at the plate prevented the Northeastern baseball team from advancing in the 2017 Beanpot as the Huskies lost their semifinal game, 5-1, against the Eagles at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Despite the loss, Northeastern (11-15) will still advance to the final round of the Beanpot on Wednesday, April 19, at Fenway Park, where the Huskies will meet Massachusetts during the 3 p.m. consolation game. The Minutemen experienced a 7-3 defeat against Harvard on Wednesday during the tournament's second semifinal in Cambridge.
Â
Borges' lone blemish of the afternoon came during the first at-bat of the game as Donovan Casey carried a full-count pitch over the NU bullpen in left field to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. From then on, the senior righty successfully kept Boston College (9-17) off the scoreboard, stringing together five scoreless frames, walking one, and scattering only four more hits.
Â
Pat Madigan's second-inning single stood as the only hit Northeastern could muster against BC starting pitcher Jack Nelson, who held the Huskies to two base runners across five innings. Nelson earned 10 of his 15 outs from fly balls hit to the outfield, gaining three more outs from strikeouts.
Â
Scott Holzwasser drew the only walk off Nelson during the bottom of the fourth, where he proceeded to steal second base before the inning came to a close.
Â
Michael Geaslen notched Northeastern's second hit of the game during the bottom of the eighth inning, scooting a one-out single up the middle. Geaslen also threw out a season high, two runners, from behind the dish, both at second base.
Zach Perry sent one up the gut as well during the bottom of the ninth, recording the third and final NU hit of the afternoon.
Â
With Borges exiting the game at the start of the seventh inning, Boston College went to work manufacturing a couple of base runners against Northeastern relievers
Tom Githens and
Kyle Murphy. Although NU first baseman
Cam Hanley made a brilliant stop to keep Jake Alu's hard-hit roller in the infield, the throw from his knees was unable to beat Alu at first, leaving the Eagles with a one-out man aboard. BC proceeded to sandwich the Huskies' pitching change with a hit batsman and a walk, loading the bases for pinch-hitter Chris Balogh, who knocked a two-RBI double to right field.
Â
Northeastern entered the ninth inning trailing, 3-0, but a pair of two-out hits by Boston College against
Tyler Brown deepened the Huskies' comeback dilemma. Johnny Adams provided the RBI double that put BC ahead, 4-0, while Michael Strem produced an RBI single, rounding out the Eagles' five-run day.
Â
Jake Farrell led off the bottom of the ninth with a five-pitch walk against Boston College closer John Witkowski and moved into scoring position on Hanley's 6-3 groundout. Perry's RBI single brought NU within four runs of the Eagles with two outs left to claim, but
Max Burt used one of them to trade places with Perry on his fielder's choice. The game ended on a controversial batter's interference call, when the home plate umpire called Madigan out for obstructing the BC catcher's attempt to catch Burt stealing second base.
