WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – On the final day of the season, the Northeastern women's rowing team closed the 2017 campaign with a bang at the NCAA Championships. Facing a slight headwind under overcast skies throughout the morning, all three NU crews finished ahead of its seed entering the championships, with the first varsity taking 17th (seeded 19th), second varsity finishing 16th in the nation (seeded 18th) and varsity four 17th (seeded 20th).
The first varsity race saw all six boats within two seats of each other in the opening stages of the race with Northeastern slightly in sixth. As Iowa and Syracuse were bow ball to bow ball at the 700-meter mark, the Huskies began to creep up from lane six to take fourth. Approaching the 1000, it was a four-boat race with the Hawkeyes, Orange, Washington State and Huskies all in the running for the top spot. As the boats reached 750-meters to go, Notre Dame had made a run to make a five-boat race, but it was Washington State who was able to pull away to take the heat at 6:36.894. Iowa, Syracuse and Notre Dame all finished within two seconds for the two through four spots, respectively, while Northeastern was close behind in fifth at 6:42.570.
All six crews in the second varsity final were level through the opening 250-meters before Indiana pulled a bit ahead 150-meters later. With the Hoosiers clearly ahead, that left Washington State, Iowa and Northeastern all fighting for second place at the 800. The Cougars would move ahead to take second outright through the midway point of the race with the Hawkeyes third and the Huskies close behind in fourth. Notre Dame would begin to challenge the Huskies for fourth place at the 1250-meter mark as the crews jockeyed for position through the remaining 750-meters. It went right down to the wire after Indiana won the race by two seconds, followed by Washington State and Iowa, and it came down to .010 seconds as Northeastern snuck its bow ball across the finish ahead of the Fighting Irish for fourth at 6:55.679 seconds.
The varsity four got off to a quick start along with Brown and Indiana in the first 250-meters of the race. With all boats overlapping, Notre Dame got into the act by passing the Huskies for third before Gonzaga and Washington State both pulled even with NU for fourth as Brown began to pull away from the field. As the race hit the middle 1000, Northeastern fell off the pace a bit to drop down to sixth place, but continued to fight the rest of the way. With 500-meters to go, the Huskies overlapped with Gonzaga for fifth place and the two crews went stroke for stroke the rest of the way before Northeastern ultimately edged the Bulldogs by .190 seconds at 7:40.798.
The NCAA Championships cap a memorable season for the Huskies, who captured their fourth straight CAA title to earn an automatic berth into the national championship. NU also earned a silver medal in the 1V at the Eastern Sprints for the second straight season.
In addition, Wilhelm was named CAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Huskies to their sixth NCAA appearance in his 19th season at the helm. He has also led his squad to the 1V grand final at the Eastern Sprints on nine occasions, including six straight from 2012 to 2017.
